There are two good hard drive deals going on right now. Newegg has a Samsung 1.5tb for $79.99 w/FS. The promo code is EMCYTYV22.

Another good deal is a WD 120gb notebook drive for $29.99 at Frys.

I know it is Frys and I am pissed at them, but there are no rebates on this one. I am probably going to buy two of these. One for my laptop and one for my car. I was thinking of putting one in an enclosure and putting all of my CDs on it. I found an enclosure at Microcenter. Will this work?

If it's data you care about, I'd consider buying extra disks and getting a RAID enclosure. It's a lot more expensive than the $7.99 enclosure you're looking at, but when a disk dies, you'll be real glad you have a spare.

Gary,
First, I thought Crabb and others said there were issues with RAID. Second, the enclosure is for putting the hard drive in to go portable. I was hoping to plug it into the USB port on my car stereo and have access to all or a lot of my CDs. I don't really need it for back up, as it is more of a convenience.

Not sure what the RAID issue would be. If you're just looking for a portable solution, then the one you linked to would probably be fine. But I'd have a RAIDed original back home...

I will have to bring up that thread where RAID was discussed.

I know what your saying about backing up, but I just do it manually. I have five or six drives that I am using, so no shortage there. I am giving my mom my new notebook with a new drive. I am going to take the drive out of that one and that will be my official Win 7 install drive.

Frys was of course out of the notebook hd when I dropped by. I ventured over to Microcenter to pick up the connector. I inquired about price matching the Fry's hard drive, but they didn't have any in that small of a capacity. I almost lost it when one of the sales drones was trying to encourage me to buy another drive. His exact quote was "You should buy right now and not wait, because the prices on these will rise and become a lot more expensive." Wow, I almost wanted to return to the intellectual embrace of the Fry's drones.

Oh Wan, these were your stores up by Gwinnett Place. Maybe I should have said I would sick the Wanman on them.Wink

Some good deals are coming for 2tb drives. I have read that they will be retailing for under $100 soon. I have seen them on sale for under $100 already.

I got lucky with Frys. They had a sale on 250gb laptop hds. This one was a WD Scorpio Black for $35. I am not sure if it is online, but you can check. This is a great price for a laptop hd.

Already picked up two! Very Happy

Haven't tried the WD 2TB drives yet. Have had pretty good luck with Hitachi and Samsung.
