I want to use the HDMI port of my laptop to display on my LCD TV, which also has HDMI . I can display another laptop's screen on the same LCD TV through hdmi with no problems, using the same cable. I took the laptop to a friend's house and was able to show the same laptop's screen on their lcd tv without problems using the same cable.
I am just stumped on why this particular laptop refuses to talk to this particular TV, even though the TV talks to other laptops and the laptop talks to other LCD TVs through hdmi.

The TV is a humax 40" LCD TV(Humax LP40-TDR1) with built-in hard drive for recording programmes on it and the laptop is a Dell Studio 1557

Welcome to the wonderful world of HDMI. Users see connection problems between receivers, TVs, and components like DVD and Blu-Ray players all the time.

You could be having HDCP issues in that one of the pieces in your system is HDCP compliant and one isn't. Or there could be computer-to-video timing problems. Some TVs are real sensitive to timing and don't accept computer timing over HDMI. Unfortunately many (but not all) computers send such timing by default over their HDMI outputs. Sadly, the fact that each piece of your setup works with other items is only adding to the confusion and not helping to diagnose anything. Well, that's not entirely correct. You know that the HDMI connections on your TV and laptop aren't dead, but that's about it.

What Royce said is all true... HDMI can work beautifully, or it can be a royal pain in the ass. If we accept that HDMI can be a royal pain in the ass sometimes, HDMI on a Windows box has a good chance of fitting in that category.

The only thing I'd recommend is to make sure the BIOS is updated on your computer, drivers are updated for your video card, and check to see if there are any firmware updates for the Humax display... Beyond that, there isn't much you can do.

Try some different resolution settings on the laptop. You might have to get an HDCP stripper to make them work together.

Thanks to everyone who have replied. I have updated the drivers , bios, changed resolutions to no avail etc. The only thing I have not done is use a HDCP stripper, as I don't have a clue if there is one that connects HDMI to HDMI. Any recommendations?

One more thing to try is PowerStrip. It can allow your card to display custom resolutions and timings. Computer video's 60Hz is exactly 60Hz, while consumer electronics video's 60Hz is actually 59-point-something-or-other. Forcing your card to output at video timing might be what is needed. You can download a trial version to see if it'll work with your laptop's video card.

Hook everything up and turn the TV on and set it for that HDMI input. Then restart your laptop leaving the tv on.

I bought an HDMI stripper not long ago.

It came with a pole.

Hot, Dirty, Moist, Impetuous,... Strippers. I'll take em. Where do I place my order? Is the pole extra? Laughing

I tried the above without any success.

Will HD Fury work?

HDFury is a digital to analog converter that can help with HDCP issues. It may or may not work for you.Does your tv have vga or rgb or component connections?

It has both VGA and Component. I can use an ordinary vga cable to connect to the vga port with no problems apart from the fact that its not HD quality

Check to make sure the component or the vga input can support the higher resolution. Can you post a link to the manual?

The only option I have is to try if HDFury will work, but they are not cheap, and not something you buy without being a little bit sure it will work.
