Hi guys,
First off I want to say thanks! To everyone here on the board for helping me out. I've gotten quite far with the Sony 1270 without having to ask any noobie questions about setup and so forth. Using the search function helped a lot. But now I have run into my first hard problem.
I've been able to converge and get everything lined up and focused...Picture looks great by the way! (still using 480i, from a dvd via s video, and waiting to get wife approval for the HD Fury3). IMHO I've got all the adjustment close as I think is possible. There are no misalignments of colors or anything to speak of. Like I said it looks great!
My only problem at the moment is I cannot for get the blue tube to focus very well. From my understanding Blue, should be slightly unfocused. Is this true? My problem is not being able to get it focused on the screen but through the tube face. It's not as clear and tight as the red and green with the lenses off and looking directly into the tube. The astig adjustment should be spot on as the flare is equal on all sides and the brightest point in the center, with a good circle. Is this a bad blue tube? Or Blue gain adjusment? When watching its only noticeable on white text, the white is nice and bright but seems to have a blue flare to it, like its glowing blue. It's equal on all sides and not flared off to the left or right or anything. I don't know where to go from here, I'm stuck like chuck!
Other than that I love this big sucker! Love the colors and picture is great, and I'm only using 480i from a dvd!

That is usually normal, esp. with a set with high hours on it.

Did you adjust the focus control over the blue tube, in that G2/focus block with the 6 controls on it? If so, that's as good as you'll get.

Do yourself a favor, and spend $25 on a line doubler. Well worth it, even if you never go HD down the road..

I've got a DWIN Transcanner I here that I'd sell for $25 plus shipping

yea I figured that much. I'm gonna try to redo the G2 blue focus again one more time. Hopefully, I can get it to show a little sharper. Is there a better guide that I can follow? My 1270 doesn't have the terminals to adjust the voltage via a voltmeter. So I had to follow the service manual and tried to follow it as best as I could. The manual states to input a fH=76Khz R.G.B signal, but I had no idea how to do that without a signal generator and that I'm trying to just calibrate the S-video signal. Is this very important? Otherwise, I'm just doing it by eye...
Oh and yea, I've tried different s-video cables, all 6ft in length. Went from a plain jane, to a mid-end gold plated, to a monster gold plated. No difference though...

Oh and I know you guys are gonna curse at me for running at 480i, but I'm working on that. Just trying to convince the wife that an HDMI upgrade is a worthy investment.

Do you have a computer or laptop with a DVD player and some sort of surround sound that can take sound input? If so problem solved or at least a temp solution. I remember the days of watching movies on s-video, not fun indeed.

Almost any cheap $50 DVD player will output 480p and probably 720p, which is about all your Sony can handle. Of course it won't line-double other sources like Curt's Transcanner can.

You still need some way to convert component or HDMI to RGB -- how are you doing that now? A Fury3 will do the job well if you want to spend that much, but IMHO HD is overkill for an ES set like the 1271. Another possibility: if you just want to play SD DVDs, I have a Momitsu DVD player with RGB-out capabilities. That's how I drove my projectors until I got a Moome box. This Momitsu also has the nice feature of being network-capable, so you can rip DVDs to a PC or media server and play them on the Momitsu. I'll match Curt's $25 + shipping. Smile

Thanks Curt, Lotree, and Gary!
I'm gonna try lotree's idea real quick and then give you guys a holler on some of that tasty sounding equipment.
The focus isn't hugely bad, honestly. I was just hoping to see if I can make an improvement.
I was evenly honestly thinking of retubing thru VDC. Does the ES focus have more to do with the age of the magnets or more to do with the age of the phosphor in the tubes?

If you want to step up the picture to HD grab an HDFury1 and a bluray player or PS3. Set to 1080i, dial in the projector and sit back and watch.

ES sets like the 1270 are inherently less sharp than EM-focus sets, and they lose sharpness as the tubes age. 720p/1080i is pushing the limits of what ES sets are capable of.

Unless you're really in love with that 1270, I wouldn't invest in new tubes. If you can find some tubes really cheap, OK, but before I'd buy a set of new tubes I'd just find a cheap EM projector. Or a really great EM projector from Curt if you can spend a bit more. Smile

I hear ya, not really worth the trouble I guess..

The only reason I asked, is because I got two of these babies, one working and not working, they even both came with remotes. : )
The working one (the one I'm using obviously) has perfect red and green, with only slight burn on the blue (you have to really look into it hard with a UV light to see it) otherwise, its great! The non-working one isn't running at the moment, for some reason the tubes shut off after about 2 min after it powers up. The blue tube on this unit, has a little less burn than the working unit. So I was thinking swapping them may improve my focus. If not, then maybe I can get this one working and possibly stack them? : ) just a thought.... Curt, do you know what this can be?

Have you noticed a difference in calibrating using a cleaner source? does it make the convergence lines and focus seem tighter? Just a thought, if maybe why my blue is slightly out of focus (looking at the tube face directly) due to signal quality.

Yes. If you feed the PJ a higher resolution you will have to do a complete setup for that. Get a hdfury and run 1080i. You will love it.

The blue is supposed to be slightly out of focus. That's done to make the grey scale look better and increase the brightness. Don't worry about it.
