Okay, one problem solved now on to the next. Despite the fact that my recently acquired Runco was "professionally installed", relatively poor use was made of the phosphor face. It's probably 20-22 mm from the edge of the tube. The green tube, which is the worst, is probably an 8 maybe a 7. The red and blue probably 9. So...should I maximize the raster if it means going past previous installations? Some considerations: tube longevity is not an issue (3 hours a week tops) and second is I am only throwing a 72" horizontal 16:9. Thoughts?

If you don't mind a slightly brighter image on the outside edges, yes, absolutely use more of the tube face. You get more resolution. If the wear lines are annoying, then shrink it back down.

NEC used a really small area of the tube face. Our former NEC guru used to say it was to get better focus, as the edges of the tubes would give worse focus than towards the middle. I see what he meant, but I also have seen way too many short lived NECs due to tube wear as you say.

You might start to have problems with convergence too. The lenses are not matched and can throw it off when you run really wide on the face of the tube.

Don't let the wear bother you, you will not see it in 99% of the stuff.

Deron.
