Caddyshack [Blu-ray]

Warner Brothers has announced Harold Ramis' comedy classic 'Caddyshack' starring Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray for Blu-ray on June 8.

Specs haven't been revealed yet, but supplements will include Caddyshack: The Inside Story, Caddyshack: The 19th Hole, and a theatrical trailer.

Plot Synopsis:

Greenskeeper Carl Spackler (Bill Murray) is about to start World War III - against a gopher. Pompous Judge Smails (Ted Knight) plays to win, but his nubile niece, Lacey Underall (Cindy Morgan), wants to score her own way. Playboy Ty Webb (Chevy Chase) shoots perfect golf by becoming the ball. And country club loudmouth Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield) just doubled a $20,000 bet on a 10-foot putt. Insanity? No. Caddyshack.

Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray and Ted Knight tee off for a side-splitting round of fairway foolishness that does for golf what National Lampoon's Animal House did for fraternities and Police Academy did for law enforcement. With hitmaker Harold Ramis (National Lampoon's Vacation, Analyze This) in the director's chair, the virtuoso comic skills of all four blend into a riotous hole-in-one for comedy fans. In Caddyshack, the term "golf nut" takes on a deranged double meaning -- and nonstop laughter is par for the course!

To answer the age old question: How many times can I buy the same movie?

This'll be number 4 for me:

The original crappy DVD
The remastered DVD
The HD DVD (my only HD DVD which I keep as a reminder why we don't want format wars)
And now the Blu-ray

The good news is that the price is only $17.49.

I love this movie.

Judge Smails: You know, you should play with Dr. Beeper and myself. I mean, he's been club champion for three years running and I'm no slouch myself.
Ty Webb: Don't sell yourself short Judge, you're a tremendous slouch.

Al Czervik: Oh, this is the worst-looking hat I ever saw. What, when you buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh?
[looks at Judge Smails, who's wearing the same hat]
Al Czervik: Oh, it looks good on you though.

Carl Spackler: So I jump ship in Hong Kong and I make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas.
Angie D'Annunzio: A looper?
Carl Spackler: A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

This is definitely a classic movie to have --- Rodney Dangerfield is a one-of-a-kind.

hmmmm, I didn't realize there were two DVDs. I will have to check which one I have. I thought the picture was good for an old movie, so I must have the remastered version. Can't say I'll be getting the blu-Ray. Upconverting the DVD is enough for this one I think.

The HD DVD and Blu-ray is surprisingly clear for most of the movie given the low budget. Much more vibrant colours too. To quote one review:

Quote:
The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

The video is given a 1080p/VC-1 encoded transfer and displayed at an aspect ratio 1.78:1. The source is clean for the most part, but during the title sequence is noticeably dirty. Some of the colors have very bright, vivid hues to the point they look almost unnatural, like they are out of a comic book. The blue of Danny's jeans, the green of some of the grass at the club, the reds in Smails' office and the club's banquet area, and of course everything Czervik wears all pop out in comparison to the rest of the scene. Blacks are good, though not consistent, and shadow delineation is poor on occasion, typically when shadows occur in daytime on the course.

In the foreground and in close-ups, good details are seen in the textures, like the gopher's hair or blades of grass. Edges of objects in backgrounds and longer shots lose their sharpness. Depth won’t impress, but is adequate for the film's age, and the transfer appears free of digital artifacts.

If you're a fan of the movie, given the low price of the Blu-ray, it was a no brainer for me.

Finally, we can really appreciate the cinematography that made this film famous.

In other news, none of the Star Wars movies are out in high def - unless you count Usenet as a media format along with HD DVD and BluRay. Any bets on whether we'll be see Episode III beaten to the punch by Police Academy 7: Mission To Moscow as well? Smile
