TV/Projector: Barco BG808s (2002 build)

Posted: Wed Mar 10, 2010 9:46 pm    Post subject: 2 replace or not 2 replace?

I've been off the boards for some time due to family commitments and a basement reno, but my HT is getting close to being back together again.

I have a Marquee 8500 with fairly fresh tubes that I was using before my renovation. I was using this on a Da-Lite 89" 4:3 screen at 1080p and was quite happy with the image. I came accross a Screen Innovations 92" 16:9 screen on one of the local used lists and will be using this screen in the new setup. (92" diag is the largest I can go as the screen resides in a 'nook' that is only 87" wide). I've got the projector back up (home made mount out of unistrut and readyrod) and started dialing it in on the weekend and it's looking pretty sweet.

Today when doing my after lunch stroll around my building at work, I came accross a Barco Graphics 808S/E+ PFC behind the local electronics recycling place. Needless to say spoke to the owner and quickly ferried it back to my office warehouse! I've only done a preliminary once over of the Barco so far, but it looks pretty good. I looked at the tubes though the lenses with a flashlight and can't see and discernable burn. I've porwered it up and I can get the menus up on all three tubes and it's just shy of 5000 hours on the chassis. BTW, it has a build date of January 2002 (my Marquee is 1997), and has a factory mounting kit still attached to the bottom.

My dilema is now wether I should stay with the Marquee or move over to the Barco (provided I can accomodate the length of this beast). It seems like the Barco is much quiter and if it has the PT18-205 tubes (higher res. than the Marquee?) it might be a winner.

I'd appreciate any opinions.

Thanks,
Alan

Adding rubber fan mounts tot he LVPS will noticeably lower the Marquee fan noise and adding a 22 ohm resistor inline should slow the fans down just enough and still give plenty of cooling.

But they are both nice machines.

Tough call, remember the Marquee still has a higher BW and shorter video chain.

BG 808/s... What's the E+PFC? That's LC, right? If so, you should have better contrast, no halos, and way better colors. No disrespect to you AC guys, but I LOVE LC and couldn't go back to an air-coupled machine no matter how much better the video chain was. I HATE halos.

A free BG808/s with nice tubes... You suck.

Oh, and the proof is in the puddin'... Since you have both, no need to listen to opinions... Set them both up and A/B and see which makes the best picture for yourself.

I'm not sure what the E+PFC is either. It is AC with HD8 rev2 lenses, which is the same as my Marquee so their even on htat point.

The tubes are as follows;
Green: P18-205GD
Red: P16LNQ37RJA
Blue: P16LNQ37BMB

Upon further inspection, it looks like there may be some slight burn on down the left side of the tube face, but otherwise looks good. I'll have to pull the lenses tomorrow and take a closer look.

Ah, OK. Well, then if you like your 'Quee and the tubes are good, there's probably little reason to switch. Unless you have ceiling height issues... While it's certainly longer, I think the 808 is probably quite a bit shorter, for more headroom.

It would be interesting to hear how they both looked set up together in an A/B test, though.

those tubes will be sharper than the stock Marquee 180DMB but it's not a huge difference, 5K tube-hours is nothing to sneeze at. You could always Sell the Barco and upgrade the Quee or vice versa, either machine would benefit greatly from color filtered HD-145 lenses for instance.
