Gday everyone, got a theory on this arcing Sony that i want to run by you...

Original thread is here: http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=172911&highlight=#172911

Nothing seems to have cured this arcing.

I was reading around the forum in my spare time the past couple days and i saw a thread saying something about the lack of grounding straps across the back of the tubes could and probably would cause some arcing. I dont think the Sony VPH 1001 has straps there anyway, i know mine doesnt, but i think it has some copper fingers underneath the tubes.

If this connection between my new tubes and these copper fingers is not a good one, could this result in my arcing problem?

What do you all think?

Thanks in advance Smile

Hello

Try taping the copper fingers tight to the glass, see if that helps.

yes absolutely, the tube HAS to be grounded to the chassis in some form or another. Different manufacturers do it in different ways but basically your pulling the static charge off the tube bell to ground

Cheers people, that is something ill have a look at when i can get to pulling it back apart, these tubes are still 07MS tubes, but they were not fitted to a Sony projector, i didnt really compare them before the swap, cause they are basically identical at first glance, so it wasnt something i thought about.

I couldnt see any good reason for all 3 leads ( 9 leads in total once id swap them twice ) to just start arcing out of nowhere, which doesnt start the instant they are fired up, can take up to 30 seconds before the arcing starts, and usually starts with a bit of a crack sound.

very likely that's the problem. The charge on the bell doesn't start immediately, but takes time ot build up. Then when it's ready it will arc-over. If you have non-sony tubes then you need to look a the old tubes carefully and se what kind of tube-ground sony used. I remember on the G70 it was just a heavilly insulated wire from the tube to the chassis.

They are Sony tubes, but i think you mean that they came from an Electrohome originally instead of a Sony.

Thanks alot for your input Draganm, youve given me new hope that i may be able to get the old girl going again!! Smile
