Hi All!

I bought a Barco Data 708S about a year ago and used it for 4 months. Stored the projector away and took it with me again 3 days ago. Hooked everything up and after replacing the remote's battery it worked.
I left the unit in standby for the night and when I wanted to set it up the next morning I noticed the red standby LED was off while the unit was switched on.

The unit does absolutely nothing when switched on. (I only notice the lights in my room slightly dim when the switch is operated, so it does draw power). There are no led's on at the frond, at the processor board or at the back.

I went to an electronics store and had the 5 (glass) fuses from the powerboard measured and they're ok.

To look further for possible failures, is it a good idea to disconnect the yellow cables (see pic, circled in red) from the power board one by one and test the system every time to see if it powers up?

Check the main fuses lower right corner and check for an open ceramic power resister also lower right.

Thanks for your quick reply Tom! All (5) glass&sand filled fuses were checked ok, just checked them again with a multimeter.
The resistor you're talking about, is it the one circled in red below? I found that one to be more loose/flexible than the other components on the board, guess I have some soldering to do? Just have to figure out a way of detaching the plastic pane below the board to get to the solder points.

I don't like to color of the 9volt standby supply is there heat damage around the unit or on the other side of the board.
This should be a cream colour

Close-up of the 9V PSU.

Purple looks like corrosion, Red is sort of burnt on the other side of the board. (PJ on it's side on the floor, I hope this isn't too bad for it.)

Looks like the 9V PSU was burnt? Can something like this happen due to aging? The other components seem to be left untouched. Problem is there isn't any description on the PSU so I don't know what to order to replace it?

Looks to me like that resistor next to the 9v psu is shot.

Hmm... The biggest problem is that I donīt know anything about the 9V PSU. Resistors shouldnīt be to hard to find.

I noticed two pins with a description saying place a jumper to bypass standby mode which I tried and the unit goes on again. The fans spin up and the pj makes a high frequency noise (which I think it always did while booting) and all green ledīs at the front light up. Just the tubes wonīt fire up. (I see some small lights on te tubes faces move) I have a VGA RGBHV cable connected to a laptop " 1280x1024@60hz which has worked before. I guess bypassing the standby mode also cuts out the IR remote and so I canīt select a different input.

I'm no expert but this might spot burn the tubes. Be careful.

My advice is to get a new SMPS. the burnt transformer is common.
Those tranformers are tricky to get out especially when the surround is cooked.
If you look above that burn the board has had other soldering work done too

With the 9 volt transformer gone I doubt you have lights on the controller board any how

Ok well it does turn on and even gives lights on the controller board. Any tips on sourcing an SMPS in Europe? Are other/older models compatible like 701? (I already sent Curt an email)
