He has a few customers on his visit, but has room for more.
Since we'll also be looking at the G90, he'll most likely be here for a little longer, so anyone interested in his services, shoot him an email:
craigr@cir-engineering.com
Or you could even go to his site:
http://www.cir-engineering.com/
Of the top three calibrators that I know of, he's definitely among them. And what I've found about him that sets him somewhat apart form the average calibrator is his vast understanding of all the techie things that involves the inner aspects of video quality, to include how it all works.
He'll be looking over my setup once he gets here, but by that time, I'll be sporting a RED C element. So I'll be ready for his picky assessment this time...+

You guys are the best Thanks for all the kind words.
If anyone needs service I'll be driving from Chicago to DC to Boston to Buffalo. So if you are on my route I can include you.
craigr@cir-engineering.com
And Mike, you are really going to be happy with that red c element once we redo your color calibration!

Yeah, there's always been a few people on the forums that have been very generous to me, in that they have always looked at what contributions I've made to the technology and the efforts and time spent on projects knowing i would not gain anything from it.
They have over the years sent me Christmas presents to include simply asking for my Paypal email. I can't begin to list the offers, items and gifts and encouragement I've received over the years.
All I can say is that it has been a real blessing, and though I'm sure I've shown how appreciative I was, I'd really feel better If I'm able to meet and face a few of them face to face.
So, I must make my way to Saint Louie..

I know Craig is the big calibrator now, but what happened to all of the other CRT guys? I haven't seen many post lately. Is Craig all that is left of this ancient religion?

Well, William Phelps isn't traveling anymore and he was really outstanding. Terry is still going as far as I know too.

Yeah, that's what my wife didn't understand when I first caught the fever for CRT. She now understands that my family of "Video Dorks" (as she calls us) is mostly made up of the type of people that are becoming few and far between in this "ME! ME!" world we now live in. That's also why she never gives me any trouble when I tell her I'm heading out of town for a weekend get together and she fully understands that the weekend is more than just seeing someone's HT. It's about sharing a few beers with good people and getting to know the people of this fine hobby.
If all goes well, which at this point it is, then I will be able to hang on to my G90 and stay part of the family!
The door is always open here in the LOU for anyone passing through!!!!

I am glad someone got it.
Craig,
That is interesting, as I don't see Terry post much anymore. I was just curious, as you are the only CRT calibrator that seems to post these days.

Well, one reason may be that I still like CRT best, and I still run my G90 as my primary theater projector. You notice Mike Parker around a lot and he likes CRT best as well. Neither William nor Ken run CRT's at home anymore, but I just can't give mine up.
Terry may not be posting much because the number of clients he has may match up well with the amount of work he wants. I know that sometimes when I have too much work I don't post for months.
For me, I try and keep the CRT part of the job fun (some days are funner than others). I post when I feel like posting so that I'm not feeling forced. Sometimes that's a lot of posting and other times I may not come around for three months if I haven't been using my own theater much.
I do wonder how much longer we'll have a CRT following though. I hope it lasts a while longer.

My two blended MP Mod'd Marquee 9500LC Ultras will be following you for a while.
If you would like to see them in action whilst you are in the DC area, you (and Mike) are welcome to come over.

Actually, I would have loved to have seen them, but I just don't have any free time this trip
Next time maybe? I will be back for Thanksgiving or maybe sooner.

I have seen this many times before, and I have said the same thing myself many times.
Unfortunately, digital displays have taken over not because they are better, but because they are more convenient. We hang on to our CRT's because we like them better, in spite of the inconvenience (and some times because of it).
Think about this: The move towards digital displays started about 15 years ago, and virtually all R&D investment on CRT's stopped at the same time. All CRT's we now use were originally designed for graphic usage and not for HD video. We tweak the hell out of them because we know what the potential is.
If just one CRT projector manufacturer had spent just 5% as much on R&D as did a digital manufacturer, we might have a new CRT projector that would be something like this:
1 - Tubes dimensioned for 1.78 (or maybe 2.40) AR. Or at least three anamorphic lenses so the entire tube could be used.
2 - Deeper colored glycol for an even larger color gamut - perhaps this could be done with more active phosphur that had increased light output.
3 - Video bandwidth extended to beyond 300MHz to be able to easily handle higher (scaled up) resolutions and/or higher refresh rates.
4 - More advanced focus coil/circuitry to have a smaller beam spot size.
5 - Whatever else!
Would you rather have something like that, or the latest bulb design.
I know - I'm just dreaming!
Bob

I'll be sticking with CRT until I can get a digital that can exceed the picture quality of my 10k hour G70, last just as long, and cost around the same amount (cheap!). It will probably be a while...

Bob,
I mentioned some of this to Scott one time. His reply was that CRT is a really mature technology with not to much untapped potential. Per your points:
1) Most sims want to go the other way with more of a 1 to 1 tube ratio.
2) This would have been nice.
3) I thought that this would be possible with advances in electronics, but Scott was less optimistic. He didn't elaborate.
4) I remember asking Scott about this when Frankenyokes were developed and he seemed to think there was/is some potential there.
Unfortunately, the CRT projector market was probably never that big do to the price. Even if something like you described were developed, it would have probably cost north of $15k in the best case scenario.

I agree, in fact I think it would be much greater than $15K.
But - If it were done, I think it would easily be recognized as having the finest PQ available at any price.
The high end consumer market is totally different from the commercial market - There are people that would pay anything to have the very finest. Just look at the insane prices paid for "high end" audio gear. How many $30K+ turntables are available.
While I could never afford one, I would check e-bay every day for the first used one I could find!
Then there is the other extreme with the philosophy that "no one ever lost a dollar by underestimating the taste of the consumer market".

When Craig mentioned his home theater I thought of the plumber's house with leaking faucets and the auto mechanic's vehicle that barely runs.
Craig, is your theater's G90 as good as it can be?
