I have recently been revisiting some clients with 9inch CRTs in their systems to upgrade there picture performance. Re-tubed a 9501 and added the Moome card with very nice results. Same solid results from an NEC. Unfortunately, the last visit was to a G90 that someone else had started maintaining (installer of mine that branched off). The unit was very poorly configured and looked terrible.

I have added the Moome card along with an effective HDMI switcher/scaler. The unit locks on 720p and 1080i nicely, but cannot provide a good picture on 1080p (prior installer had set it up in 480p with the DRC on!!!!). Image is much better, but having difficulty with solid color balance and light output. Tubes have seen 3000 hrs and look pretty healthy. My Eye One measured a very low 4ft lamberts with the 100ire window. The gamma is improved, but well below 2.2 still. The client has no idea what was serviced etc so I suspect some controls may have been altered internally.

I want to keep his cost down so any issues to look for would be appreciated. I am not going to charge him for refreshing my memory, but I also do not want to spend 25 hours into getting this one somewhat healthy.

BTW I had to really drop the rough steps on the Gamma adjustment on the Moome card to get it even watchable.

Thanks for any help,

Bob T.

Can you elaborate on this? What's not good about the 1080P picture? Does it just look out of Sync?

Clarence it looks smeared. Reminds me of when clients set the scan rate on a Faroudja scaler too high. The picture dims immediately, possibly a stressed power supply. That could also attribute to the lack of light output. (no noisy switching supply though). The line resolution in 720p looks pretty clean, so I optimized 720p and setup an additional memory for 1080i content just in case someone defaults the scaler. I have sent 1080p via a player direct with a 2 mtr hdmi cable and also with the scaler over the extended distance. Same problem. I have also changed the sync format including the various modes available and suggestions included with the Moome card. I am not having the black dc restoration issue, but I did not check the firmware rev to make sure it includes some of the patches.

Keep in mind you guys work with these daily and I slowly getting up to speed again. Doing the Marquee was textbook as they always seemed to be in the past. I did a bunch years back including some crazy setups, but I have been focusing on acoustic work on theaters the past 8 years since I no longer have a store front.

Just stoled this from the HDFury2 FAQ's:

Go into the G90 service menu "Input Setting" with the fury installed and set the "Clamp" to HP or H/C from auto. This should straighten out the picture if it is varying in brightness and getting weird bands of dark as scenes change.

Thanks for the info, unfortunately I have seen that problem before and it is not the issue. I was concerned that it was not saving the change as was an early software glitch in the G90, but they patched this at the end of 1999 and this one is okay.

Do you have another display that is 1080p capable to rule out the source as the problem?

Chris.

Chris good check, but the source is good and any existing unit has the same issue. Checked ground issues also, but that typically shows up in other 60hz material also at lower scan rates.

A picture would be worth 1000 words. I assumed the sync is set wrong.
