Ok, so yesterday I am watching Solaris (2002) for about the tenth time. I am comfortable watching George Clooney, and I know the wife likes him. I don't mind that either, because I really like Natascha McElhone.

Anyway, the movie brought about the same questions I kept thinking about and I thought I'd offer them here. From IMDB synopsis ... A troubled psychologist is sent to investigate the crew of an isolated research station ...

Ok, so the character Chris Kelvin agrees to go to this place. He arrives, two adults are still alive, two others are in body bags, and yet no one can explain to him why a child is on board when there shouldn't be one. Imagine for a minute YOU are Chris. I think I wouldn't be just asking calmly 'who's kid is it and how did it get here', but rather knowing no child was transported there from Earth how is this child not being treated like an alien life form.

Where did that anticipated fear go? I'd be in shock, looking for a firearm, etc., etc., etc. How about you?

Ok, the last remaining adults on board can only tell Chris they cannot explain what is going on until he experiences it himself. Hmm, are these two idiots? I can understand Snow not being able to explain, because like the child he's a freaking alien, too--this isn't revealed until the end of the movie.

And let's take a step back in Chris' questions about the first things he is observing. There is a kid that no one can explain, that he cannot determine in origins, etc., etc., etc., but not Gordon can consider that like the child maybe Snow isn't what he should be.

Ok, so before Chris even leaves to go out to this remote research station DBA sends a security team out there. Yet, either they arrived and cannot be explained, nor even inquired about by Chris when he arrives, nor does Gordon try to offer up anything on the topic.

Now, unlike Chris' character, I am not a psychologist. BTW, this may be in error. I thought psychologist didn't practice medicine. My mistake? Anyhow, I am an individual that has smoked some funny stuff in my lifetime (and taken a good bit of other entertainment in my youth), but I have not lost my sense of reality.

If I were sent out to this remote research facility, which is in orbit about 'Solaris', and I am told some strange things are going on including the crew turned off the A.I. system, I think I'd be a bit paranoid on arrival and not just when my dead wife's hand grasps the back of my neck after having one heck of a sexual dream about here, which came after another on-station dream of how he met her.

So, the big thing for me leading up to THAT particular event in which Chris shows Rheya one of the escape pods, locks her in it alone, and sets it off, is why would anyone with an analytical mindset consider the analog of his late wife more of a threat than the explained child (Gibarian's Son)?

And if the first instance of an analog Rheya is realized upon the second analogs entry, how can Chris consider anyone buy himself as being human? You would think by that point he'd be racing for the escape yacht and go back to earth. Or, if he's going to accept and trust Gordon and Snow, even Gibarian's Son as being 'safe' then why didn't he consider the same for first analog of Rheya?

More yet, why didn't Chris call Gordon and or Snow to his sleeping quarters and ask them to lend a hand explaining the first analog of Rheya? I'm left asking if the Chris Kelvin character is an idiot. Thumbs Up But place yourself in the character's shoes and tell me how you would be handling the moment you entered the remote research station for the first time.
