Can you connect two monitors to a laptop simultaneously by using HDMI and VGA? Is is possible to have a triple display on a laptop if I connect one external display to an HDMI port and one external display to the VGA port? I am not sure if the computer would recognize both monitors simultaneously or give preference to one of the two and then leave one blank.

Depends on what your trying to accomplish. You can get a VGA Y-Cable and connect 2 at at a time or get a powered splitter and connect 4 or more. If you want an extended desktop you'll need a video card that supports multiple monitors. How many outputs and what type do you have on your laptop?
Right click on your desktop and choose properties, then go to settings. Is there a selection for multiple monitors?

Seems like a question born for Anandtech forums. But, why would anyone ask this question and then not tell us anything more, LIKE THE LAPTOP MAKE AND MODEL?
And welcome to the forum.
