Hello everyone.

I just opened up my NEC XG-135 from the shipping crate it's been in for the past 2 years (standing on end in a garage, unfortunately) and discovered kinda sticky orange-colored liquid all over the right (as facing the tubes) and rear sides of the case. A couple of the BNC connectors in the back have corroded on the edges as well, which may or may not be related. (It's also been in shipping to my new place in Germany for the past two months.)

First question is: what leaked? I'm thinking tinted glycol tube coolant, so I took quick pictures of the tubes through the lenses with a flash: the left one appears red, middle green, and right white (should it appear blue?) The good news is that I didn't see anything shattered.

Second: Could this have caused circuit board damage if it's been there a long time?

Third: After I wipe the mess off, should I be careful to open the case in any certain way to prevent further damage?

Fourth: Once I get it open, what should I clean the internals with? Spray-on Electronic or Tuner cleaner?

The projector worked fine when I tested it before shipping 4 years ago. (It was shipped once without a crate but there were no problems.)

Thanks so much for any help you can give!

Glycol is clear, so it's not that. ( the lenses are tinted) Got dogs? Any chance they lifted their leg on it? Smile

(Don't laugh, it happened to me!)

So there's no colored fluid in the XG anywhere? If not, then this must be condensed Rain-X washer fluid or something...the last time it was shipped, the morons who repacked my stuff into crates for temporary storage did a crappy job and broke a couple things, so this wouldn't surprise me.

However, there was no liquid on the outside of the paper covering the projector in the crate. I don't think this is an LC model, but if it is, is THAT fluid tinted?

Thanks again!

No the lc projectors do not have tinted glycol they have tinted c-elements if any tinting is present. Plus you would not have yellow you would have clear, red, or green.

OK great. So assuming it is ethyline glycol windshield washer fluid, what's the best way to clean it off of internal parts?

BTW, your avatar is really cool, bbfarmht!

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I finally got a chance to open up the projector and I've attached pictures of what I found after taking the lenses off. Sad

It looks to me like the red and blue tubes have leaked some glycol, as the air bubbles in them are way too large, and the orange color of the fluid I saw initially must be due to all of the corrosion and rusting of the metal parts it ran over.

Also, I can't tell if the green tube is full of fluid or completely empty. Seeing the bulge in the rubber at the top makes me think it too had some kind of issue.

So what is everyone's professional opinion on what I can do to get this set back up and running? There's no visible wear on the red and blue tubes, and only very light square-shaped wear on the green, so I really want to get it fixed. Any and all ideas welcome. I can take more pictures if needed.

Let me know at what kinds of stores I might be able to find the appropriate supplies as well.

Wow, that's.. ugly. I've had a few LC sets have a tiny bit of leakage, but nothing like that. The good news is, your tubes are in really good shape otherwise.

What I would do is pull all the tubes out, drain the glycol, remove the C lenses, clean/scrape all the corrosion off, fill the tubes with water, and put all the screws back. I put tubes on paper towel, as that will easily show you if there's a leak somewhere. Rotate the tubes every 24 hours to see if any more leakage happens. If not, then drain the water and refill with glycol.

yes it will eat circuit boards if it gets on them. I would be worried about the power supply's in front, make sure they're not full of Glycol.
