Did anyone here buy the 8500 that was on FleaBay in Dallas? It sold for around $300. Just interested in knowing what shape it was in, since they did not allow local inspection and it was sold "as is"...

That used to be a sure fire indication of a scam sale...

I'm the one who bought this unit. My 8500lc, which I've had for 9 yrs failed recently and I don't have any spares, so I thought this might be a decent local unit to check. They don't allow inspection so I took a chance. I;ll pick it up next week and check it out. I noticed the label was from a locak home theater company so I'm hoping for a decent unit. Also they "guarantee" working or it can be returned. At worst it may supply parts to get mine running again.

hey welcome t othe forum.

Everything except except the lenses/tube housings is identical between the 2 machines. Should be an easy fix barring any coolant leaks from the LC tubes into the chassis (hopefully that's not the case)
What happened when your 8500LC stopped running?

I don;t think was a scam, this company e-mailed me and asked if I wanted to buy the machine and I offered them $200., then it was up on e-bay.
Most often these Warehouse surplus places don't allow inspection simply because having non-employee's walking through the warehouse is a huge liability. I remember picking up a Marquee at Helett Packard once and it was like
)ring bell in lobby, wiat for reply, give secret pass-word, told where to go through secret gate, administer secret hand-shake, wait for machine to be wheeled out, don't let the gate hit you on the way out

Thanks. I spent a lot of time in the forums about 10 years ago when I was researching crts and finally found one. It has been running for nine years and hasn't had a problem til now. I purchased a transcoder and replacement battery from Curt in the last couple of years, but other than that I done nothing else. Now, looks like the hvps is not turning on. Power on, no failure lignts but no hv 'crackle'. I've pulled and reseated all the boards and no change, so I'm going to try some swaps.

Speaking of CRT longevity, you can all laugh, but I sold an Ampro 2000 about 6 years ago. They brought the set back about 3 years ago for tube fungus, and now they've used it to the point where the blue tube is worn out and fungus is back. They are buying an XG 110...
9 years of use from what I'm assuming was a used-to-you CRT is awesome. No question that you'll fix it with a board swap, and you're on the way again, unless you get a minty tubed LC unit.
If the tubes turn out to be toast, I might be interested in buying them off you...

Picked the unit up and did some basic checks. The unit powers up and displays an image! The lvps has a fan mod and is quieter than my existing one. Also came with a Stewart 16x9 100" Firehawk screen in great condition! A nice bonus. Had a JVC remote with it that doesn.t do anything, but the internal remote is good. The unit show 19K hours on the chassis, but the tubes look good.
Probably was retubed at some time. Looks to be 8+ on the tubes, but I'll know more later. I've swapped the lvps and hdm to my lc unit with no luck. Still no hv turn on. Both units check good in the new proj. Next up will be the hvps. I haven't removed one of these before, but it doesn't seem too bad. Any other ideas on what to swap appreciated.

Almost any board in the set, starting with the HDM and the HVPS.

It was the hvps! Back on now, but convergence is wacked, looks like a full init and then check everything. Curt, is it worth repairing a hvps?

Most often a HVPS is not worth trying to repair as they fail within the potted section.
