I'm quite proud of this box. I started this about 3-4 years ago, and started throwing in virtually every defective part that I pulled out of PC boards and projectors and anything else I've ever touched. About 18 months ago, the box was overflowing, so I was gonna throw the box out, but instead, went to a larger box. I try and play basketball and throw bad parts into this box from across the shop, wherever I am.

I usually miss. Once a month, when I go rooting around my tube stock that sits next to the box, I clean up said parts and fill the box. Well, it's almost time to get to an even larger box. Since I'd say 99% of the parts in this box are defective, as my 'educated guess' ratio is pretty high, there's very few good parts in this box, and what you see is everything that's gone bad in a set over the last 3-4 years.

It weighs a good 20 lbs or so, and contains several thousand dollars worth of chips n'stuff.

Should I eBay this box? Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

It's MUCH better in the shop at this point. I spent a few hours cleaning it up and while there's still a zillion sets here, the clear space has increased. With my eBay auctions ending tomorrow, a bunch of crap is leaving to boot.

Gary, the box is pretty well packed, and while I'm going through solder at a record rate (about 1/2 way through the 1 lb roll I bought on the spring already), it's a sizable amount of parts for one guy I think.

I've sadly found that with the plasmas that I'm now repairing, it's usually a board level swap at this point as compared to repairing the actual boards, because guess what, it's cheaper to buy a whole used board than repairing a board. With the older plasmas not having HD tuners in them, it's not in my best interest to spend $200-300 for a new board when I can get a used one on eBay for $50-100.

I managed to diagnose 4 of the 5 used plasmas I bought last week. One ended up having a dead short right in the plasma panel, and that set ended up being a parts donor.

I also troubleshot one 2 year old plasma that I got in from a pub. A 50" LG, it has a FET short out on the Y sus board. Fortunately, there were two FETS side by side (and room for a third which was not installed at the factory, go figure!), so I clipped out the bad one, and the set fired up.

Unfortunately there's significant board damage, so again, a used board off eBay will probably last longer than repairing this one.

Interestingly, the set has a quiet squirrel cage fan at the top of the unit that kicks in when the set is hot. I guess it worked, as all lower vent holes were completely plugged with dust.

Still, with the service call X 2 for pickup and delivery, I will charge $500, and I'll bet the pub will go for it.

Curt,

In the last several months, I've seen lots of sawed-off card edge connectors and older chips like Pentium Pros sell for astronomical prices with gold now upward of $1100.00/oz (Think $200+ for a pound of card edge connectors or 20 Pentium Pro chips). No Joke.

Someone is able to recover this gold and they pay primo on Ebay for these components.

You should ebay the whole box just for giggles. Be sure to state clearly that it's likely that NOTHING works.

You'll still do pretty good with it, I'll wager.

This is a tragedy. Dead video output modules used on CRT caligraphic projectors in commercial flight simulators. About $400 a pop.

Curiosity got me. There are 64 of them in the box.

As Ax pointed out, the recycle value of boards and especially CPU's is enormous. Whatever you do don't throw it in the trash.

Scott, can you post a closeup of those modules? Who made them? Never seen anything like that before. Then again, I hadn't seen massive chips that they use as plasma output drivers until last week. Quite the learning experience.

My 14 year old daughter has just finished building her Christmas Tree project in grade 9 (20 out of 20 without any help from me!), using transistors and chips and LEDs, so I gave her the below plasma output board and told her to tell me what was wrong with it. Smile\

She guessed right Smile

The interesting thing was, there were two FETs in parallel, and only one was shorted. I removed it, and the plasma ran fine, albeit with the one FET running pretty damn hot. WHy there's room for a third one that was never put on the board confuses me. I'm guessing this board is used in larger plasmas (this one was a 50") and they only put in the third FET for larger models?

A vidamp card from an older model. Beer bottle cap to show scale. The newer cards use two modules. The one shown drives the G-1 the other, 1902-2, drives the cathode.
