Hey everyone. I know Curt from another board, and he suggested I post my question here.
I have a older Samsung DLP. It has worked fine for the little time it has been mine, got it for free from a friend. I put it in an alcove above my gas fireplace. Which my lovely wife left on for a few too many hours. SHe said she was watching the TV, when it suddenly went out. No more picture.
When powered up, it tries to turn on, a whirring sound comes out of it, then it shuts down and restarts, and goes through that three times before it brings up the three flashing lights of doom. I read a little online, and most said it was the lamp, which I purchased, and installed, but no change. Still no picture.
Any ideas? I am an electrician so I have a little bit of electronics ability. Would love to figure this out on my own (with a little help from you I hope  ).

Well lets start with the simple stuff.
1: Does the whirring sound like a fan not running smooth? Fans must runs well.
2: Is the lamp door closed properly? There is a door switch.
3: Does the lamp housing look distorted or melted from heat?
4: Did you replace the lamp with a factory replacement and did you verify the numbers on both?

I opened up the back so that I could watch the fans. Both are running, though the lamp fan does not seem to rotate as fast, but it is moving air out. The whirring is coming from someplace else, but I could not track it down.
I closed the blue switch with my hand to make certain that was it
The original housing looked fine. No evidence of heat problems.
The lamp I bought is a direct replacement.

The color wheel is located within the optical assembly, sometimes sealed off to prevent dirt from getting into the guts of the set. That's probably what's whirring...

Direct replacement to what? The model number or the numbers off the old lamp. That model had 3 different lamp manufacturers, each with a different ballast and they dont work with each other. There is also an upgrade kit for that model and if it has been installed previously then the original lamp number based on model number will not work.

I am just happy he does.
I took the number off of the tv. It also matched the number on the old lamp. Philips 100w bp96-00224C
The new one is a Samsung, with the same number.

Let just say that I have the combine collective of service techs from around the globe. You would be amazed at the information available underground, oh wait, you are amazed.....
Usually if I can get my hands on a service manual I can pretty much determine where the problem is. That is if it has schematics, which these friggin flatpanels usually dont. Then its based off symptomatic. Of course you have to have to knowledge of how it functions and what signals goes where...
And then sometimes this stuff just gives me a headache.

The Philips is the newest version so its either a late build or was upgraded. It does have the correct ballast because the philips bulb wont fit the older ballast.
But it could be a bad ballast. I'll PM you the next test. To dangerous to post.
Also if the color wheel is not coming up to speed can cause a no start.

Did as you said, and saw no spark. Could see both fans up and running, and the whirring sound, and what reminded me of a hard drive sound..but definitely no spark

Well it could be the ballast, could be the voltages feeding the ballast, could be the color wheel is not coming up to speed.
You either have to start testing for voltages or try replacing parts. But, let me say that I'm not going to encourage testing for voltages on the ballast while its hot because this board produces very high voltages and you have to be very careful poking around in there.
Maybe pull the ballast (make sure the tv is unplugged) give it a good look over to see if anything looks or smells burnt. Check the board numbers and see how much another one cost, then make a decision.

Are you saying the whirring sound and the hard drive sound are 2 different ones? Do you remember hearing the whirring sound when the tv still worked?

There are two different sounds. The drive sound is first...that electronic sound when a hard drive is first booting up. Then the whirring sound. I pulled the ballast, and no visible signs of problems, nor did it smell like a burnt ballast.

Quick question. Is the color whell supposed to be little bits of glass strewn about its enclosure?  I think I found the problem...

Is this the right color wheel..it says as model HLN507W1X, but I add a XAA to my tv..is it the same thing? I am pretty excited to have figured it out..now I have something to go for....Samsung BP96-00250A Color Wheel
