Hi, I am new to the forums, and I been searching the internet all night for similar situations like mine but had no luck, so this is my problem... I have my cable box, ps3, and my xbox 360, I have 4 toslink cables, one is plugged into my home theater system, the other 3 r plugged in my 3 devices I mentioned above, now I bought this 3 port switch box for 15 bucks on amazon that was working great for about 6 months. the port that the ps3 is connected to is still working great flawlessly, however the cable box and the xbox ports sometimes dont work right, and at times not at all, other times, the sound flickers. So this is what i did to try and figure out what the problem is. first i switched ports, i switched ps3 plug from port 2, to port one and ps3 is still working great, but the xbox thats in port 2 still isnt working. so i switched it back to normal, of course the same results. so I then decided to unplug the wire from the ps3 and plugged it into the xbox, and the same with the ps3. I turned on the ps3, ps23 is working wonderful with the xbox wire 0plugged in, now I turned on the xbox with the ps3 wire plugged in, not working at all still. I then put everything back the way it was, I then plugged the xbox wire directly to my source device and it is working perfectly that way. Now I am stumped.. all 3 wires work perfectly for the ps3 on all 3 ports, but not for my cable box or my xbox like it use to. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am completely stumped.. I written this in kind of a rush so if I didnt explain things thoroughly or I am missing info u need, please reply and elt me know and I will supply you that information, thank you

Did you try swapping the wire from the switch to the receiver with one of the other wires?

My guess would be that one of the mirrors or lenses in the switch is dusty or slightly misaligned. The reason the PS3 probably still works is that it may have a stronger signal. Yes, optical signals have strength levels measured in decibels. Any loss of light, even minor, attenuates the signal.

Buy a new replacement or a different make and model.
You could also just try a good but careful cleaning of the optical paths.

That device has some problems with alignment and it also needs a strong signal. Seveal people have reported problems with the XBOX. It must have a weaker signal than the PS3.
You might try the "Fonzie" fix.

thanks for the advice, I decided tro be brave enough to take it apart. When I opened it, it was a short wire connected to the switch making the alignment and it looked normal, so I just dusted off the end of the little switch as well as the inside of the ports its aligning too. So far it appears to be working when I switched to the port of my cable box and the tv, and it worked with no problems so far. Never knew that just a very minor thing can mess up the signal. I am new to this so still not sure how the toslink cables work exactly lol, thanks guys, never would have thought of trying to clean the inside of the device. Well so far anyway that appears to be the problem, if its not well you will hear back from me later on
