I'm changing the blue and green tubes on my 6pg xtra. Is there a trick to removing them? I don't want to force them off, and not sure if there is some sort of locking mechanism.

Make sure you measure the locations of the atisg magnets and the rear clamp before taking them off the old tubes. It is helpfull when installing them on the new tubes.

I'm taking the tubes out of another xtra that has problems, so i'm doing a direct swap, with everything attached.

When I did mine (many times.... ), I learned Blue comes out first, but is last to go back in. It makes laying the HV leads in place easier. Also, be careful when putting the news tubes back in not to let the tube pins get bent. I found it was a good idea to screw the tube to the crt socket assembly as soon as possible.
I also cleaned the tubes and electronics on them with a fine brush to get all the dust and junk out. Compressed air does well also. It is also a good idea to pick off the silicon off the center and astig tabs while the tubes are out. Maybe it was just me, but my luck did not allow me to do direct swaps; I had to adjust yokes, centering and astig.

I did pull the blue tube first. I had to unplug all 3 leads, because I couldn't see which one was attached to which one. I haven't pulled the red tube, because it doesn't have any wear, and the connectors that attach to the tube hardware are different than the other 2 tubes.
I have picked all the silicone, and will be sure to give them a cleaning. When you say you haven't been able to do direct swaps, was that because the hardware on the tubes was slightly different? I figured I could just swap the tubes complete, and adjust everything when I set up the projector. Am I missing anything?

Yes, by all means swap the tubes and electronics directly if possible. I did a direct swap the "first" time. My situation was something along the line of, "Too many beers and not paying attention to what the hell I was doing"! I'm embarrassed to tell my whole story (stories). Let's just say I am very, very thankful for having spare parts!
Take pictures of the set-up before removing parts (maybe too late now), and refer to them when re-assembling them.
