Ok, watched 'The Hangover' a couple of nights ago and I guess I'm in the minority but I didn't find it overly funny. I really REALLY wanted to like this one after all I had heard. I found it pretty lame and uninspired. Not shocking, not over the edge. A few smiles here and there but some pretty bad acting and painful to watch situations (like Mike Tyson's cameo).
Instead of writing my own reasons why I didn't like it, I'll quote a reviewer who I agree with:
| Quote: | | "The thing I kept wondering as I approached the thirty-minute mark was, When does it get funny? I mean, "The Hangover" was a smash hit at the box office, so why am I not laughing? Light and amusing at times, yes. And not terribly offensive, unless you have a low tolerance for swearing, peeing, and vomiting on screen. But laugh-out-loud funny? No. The whole opening sequence introduces us to the characters and little else, so we don't get much joy there. Then the rest of the narrative traces the activities of the main characters as they investigate the previous night's blackout. But once you've read the plot info on the back of the keep case, there isn't much else in the movie except the exaggerated revelations of the night before. In this regard, the film is clever, I admit; it's a sort of comic "Memento" in which we don't actually see the events unfold but learn about them after the fact. Beyond the gimmick, though, I'm afraid there isn't a lot going on in the story we couldn't anticipate well in advance; and since all of the characters behave in such an idiotic manner, it's hard to take any of it seriously enough to be humorous." |
That's the thing that got me. The actors behave in such stupid manners that it's not funny that they get in trouble. The first rule of movies/comedies is to make sure to make the characters believable so that the audience feels something for the characters and likes them so when they get into trouble you feel it because that could be you. The audience needs to feel empathy for the characters. That doesn't happen here because the guys are ********.
If a person that you can relate to has bad luck and somehow is forced into stealing a police car because of a bunch of odd circumstances, that's funny, since it's believable, and the humours in how they get into that mess. But in this movie they steal a police car because they're a bunch of drunk boneheads. How's that funny? That's the sort of stuff that happens every day.
The end credits photo montage is an easy high water mark in the movie but it too little too late.
Not a bad movie, but in no way laugh out loud for me by any stretch of the imagination as I was hoping and I was really trying hard. I had a smile on my face for the first 30 minutes just waiting "c'mon... here it comes... something funny" but it never arrived. I like "dumb humour/crass/crude" movies but this one has none of it because (believe it or not) it takes a lot of work to pull it off right. This one isn't dumb, it's just lazy/unimaginative.

Thought it was pretty funny. A bit slow in the beginning, but it quickly picked up its array of antics and then everything went smoothly and humorously from there. It had a great main cast that kept the limelight interesting enough to enjoy the whole thing.

Rank it ahead or behind Anchorman?

I'd put it right there with Anchorman. Maybe a tad behind... Depends on whether you're a big Will Farrel fan or not, since he basically is the movie.
I'm amazed that some people practically hated this movie. I don't see the problem with it, frankly. What do you guys expect from this genre? What raunchy-comedies DO you think are excellent?
Maybe it's not the best movie ever of the genre, but it was certainly funny and a decent movie.

I didn't find The Hangover overly raunchy. There's a couple of things but overall not too shocking, though shock doesn't necessary mean funny.
Some raunchy movies that were funny to me that I can think of off the top of my head (I'm missing a bunch):
Recent movies:
Superbad
Wedding Crashers (not that raunchy)
American Pie
Max and Miri make a porno
Knocked Up
There's something about Mary
Classic movies (keep in mind it took a lot less to be raunchy back then):
Caddyshack
Slapshot
Vacation
Animal House
Blues Brothers
Clerks (Can a 1994 movie be considered 'classic'?)

OK, you're making my point, Kal. This is clearly a personal taste thing.
For instance, There's Something about Mary? I thought that movie was pretty lame. I don't find Ben Stiller remotely funny... In fact, I think he's a dick. But, I realize that's my personal taste, and not necessarily a reflection of the movies he's in. The Meet the Parents were pretty funny in spite of Ben Stiller.
I think there's a bit of a double-standard. You panned Hangover for not being as funny as it could have been because some of the situations weren't as realistic as they could have been, yet that's the entire formula for most of the Ben Stiller movies - situations so ridiculous as to be completely unbelievable. I mean, NOBODY is as stupid as he is in that movie. You could say the same for Vacation, Caddyshack, Blues Brothers... They're all ridiculous - that's the point!
Knocked Up and Superbad were both pretty damn funny - probably a bit funnier than Hangover - but, I'd definitely put them in the same league.

Yup. Definitely a matter of taste. I find comedies also depend on who you see them with. I found Something About Mary funny when I saw it in the theaters because of the shocking things they said/did because I was watching in a public audience. It's fallen flat for every other repeat viewing. So it's probably not one I should have included I suppose.

I remember finding "Something about Marry" in the bargain bin for $5. I put it on during a frag fest over here with 4 other PC gamers. We were laughing so hard we had to stop the game.
I tried to make it through that movie a second time and I just couldn't do it. SO Kal, I agree with you. It's one to see with an audience.

Anchorman has laugh out loud comedy....hangover is an entire situation that just isn't funny for me. Let alone the fact that there are no killer lines. If there are no funny lines, I'm out. Can I quote this movie?? no, I can't.
I can't be offended...so, it's not the raunch...but pretending to make a baby masturbate isn't funny to me. I'm not offended, I just don't find anything funny about it.
Something about Mary has at least a couple of good ones...
The only funny line in the Hangover was when the chinese guy rolled up his window and said "mothafukaaaaassss". Otherwise..nothing.
