OK, I'm working on my audio setup, and I really need a way to selectively send pink/white/sine to a given channel on command. I've searched and searched and searched, but people only seem to have (a) pre-built audio files that sequence between the speakers, which is nearly useless or (b) noise generators which only send to stereo channels or which send to everything at once.

Vista has something similar - it at least lets you play a sound in each speaker on command - but it just plays bing-bing-bong-bing sounds, which are relatively worthless for anything but saying, yeah, it's coming out of the correct speaker. Gah!

Why in God's name hasn't someone done this? It's probably the most obvious tool of anything I could think of for testing out HTPC audio setups, and there's NOTHING like it that I can find! Does anyone know anything hidden somewhere?

Why is the prebuilt audio file worthless? How long does it take you set a level?

There are lots of test disc's that have much more frequency's than you'll find with built in Systems. Are you looking for room mode nulls and peaks for different frequencies? I attached a nice program that was in a Stereophiles Guide to Home theater magazine way back when, its still on the web site too. Ok I found the info so i'll repost my post from there.

Stereophiles Guide to Home theater web site use to have a spread sheet that did the same thing, I had it somewhere but cant seem to find it. when I was building my home theater i had the luxury of a blank canvas and punched in numbers for the perfect room dimensions to totally minimize dead sound areas and allt he high points and low points for each frequency. it had calculations for seat placement/ sitting position for all axis x,y,and z. It was a really cool program. punch in your dimensions and it would show you were your trouble spots were at all axis . This was back in 2000. maybe they still have it archived.

Here is a link to the article and spread sheet originaly posted in april of 1999 by David Henderson

Reader David Henderson Provides a Spreadsheet to Calculate Room Acoustic Measurements

I will also upload it to my marquee stuff site and re post it here.

Marquee and home theater downloads

Not sure if this is what your looking for, but it figures out where and what frequencies may be problematic in your room size.

Remember, I've got a frankenstein's monster audio setup, with multiple different amps (which are really receivers). I have to set the levels on each physically, and separately. It's a huge pain in the ass to set the level, play the sequence, run to the center of the room, wait for the CHHHHHH to go by, run back... And eventually I'd like to be able to do real measurements of freq response and such with a mic, and that'll mean being able to set white/pink/sine to run constantly on a given channel. I haven't found a solution for that yet.

Oh, yeah... Hey, I have an idea. OK, so set up a video camera pointed at your SPL meter, and put a little TV in front of your amps. That way, you don't have to run back and forth! Wink

Well, if you want, I can make you a DVD image with nothing but say, 5 minutes of pink noise in each of the channels, and you can just use the track next/back button to switch between them. That would give you plenty of time to make the track back and forth between the amp(s) and the meter.

Ok here is what you need:

http://www.stereophile.com/features/424/

You can click on the chapters under the Article of TOC for what each section does, it has about 20 secon intervals of the test tones. Not sure if that is long enough for you.

Uhh... a prologic-encoded redbook audio CD doesn't do any good at all...

Vista has Room compensation....It that what you are talking about?...Mark_A_W uses it I think...You need a microphone to make it work.

http://arstechnica.com/software/news/2006/09/7682.ars

There a huge thread on AVS that goes into it. One of the things on my todo list.

I don't use the Vista Room Correction.

I use DRC by Denis Sbragion with Convolver filter by J.R Pavel. It's a lot more sophisticated.

I just set my levels using the Windows 5.1 and 7.1 test wavs (a guy talking). It's not ideal, but I've never found sequenced pink or white noise for 8 channels.

Mark is too humble, and deserves recognition for the time he has spent on this project. Nice to have someone in the home theater camp working on this stuff.
