World's Smartest 2160p Toshiba Cell TV On Sale Soon

Toshiba has confirmed that they are close to launching a stunning new TV which will include the 64bit "Cell processor" which is the power processor used in Sony's new PS3 Playstation. It will also include a Blu ray player and a 1TB recorder in one unit and have a resolution three times greater than current 1080p TV's.

First tipped by SmartHouse in January 2009 the new LED powerhouse TV could be on sale in Australia by early 2010. It will go on sale in Japan in December 2009 and be shown at the 2010 CES show Toshiba has confirmed.

Called the "Cell Regza" the TV is so powerful that it is capable recording six HD TV channels at once while up scaling 1080p content to 3840 X 2160p.

We are also told that it will have a 1 Terabyte storage system built into the cell processor's personal video recorder. The Cell Broadband Engine was initially developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba but is now owned by Toshiba with royalties being paid to Sony and IBM.

Masaaki Oosumi, president of Toshiba's Digital Media Network Company said "The new Cell Processor TV bring together Toshiba imaging, storage and network technologies".

He added "It will be Toshiba's flagship model in the true sense. It is the ultimate entertainment machine that brings more excitement than a movie in a theatre. I would like to let users experience the same sensation as they felt by watching a colour TV for the first time."

He did not reveal the exact specifications of the new TV. At the 2009 CES SmartHouse was shown the Cell processor which is capable of delivering images to a screen at 3 times the quality of current 1080p resolution.

Toshiba will announce the specifications of the Cell TV within days, he said. As for the pricing, said that it will be "fairly expensive" Oosumi said.

The heart of the new Sony PS3, Sony has spent the last three year singing the praises of the Cell processor before the cash strapped Company suddenly sold the manufacturing of the processor to Toshiba who are now set to deliver a series of offerings featuring a cell processor.

Wow, that will sure make that composite video signal shine! Smile

Pardon me for being sarcastic, but does the world REALLY need this?

NO wait, I know, a few multimillionaires will.

I'll also bet this will make HDMI an obsolete platform, and everyone will need to switch to fibre optic, as in 2013 the HDMI signal will no longer be supported. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

No, see THIS I understand. Mr. Green

THe world does not need 2160p on a consumer level though, esp. since a lot of us are telling consumers that there's little visible difference between 1080i, 720p and 1080p right now.

I guess i need to see 2160p to tell how much of an improvement it is. I'd imagine that on a 32inch screen not so much, but when we go to 70, 80, 100.....

i want to see it. Wink

This goes back to the argument how much resolution do you need? Film has higher resolution in the theater than the 4K digital but few people can tell the difference.

So they've upped the resolution again. Unless you are running 100" + panels will you notice it? Eg a 42" 2160P plasma viewed at 8 feet in a typical living room?

Can you really see the difference with a 100" display as well? I mean from a 'normal' viewing distance, not with your nose pressed against the display.

Watching 42" at 8', you can't even tell the difference between SD and HD. You have to sit within 1.8x to resolve HDTV with 20/20 vision (see this post). A 42" diagonal screen is about 37" wide, and 1.8x that is 66.6" or 5.5'. 8' is 2.6x. I doubt you could even fully resolve SD at that distance.

Now those of us who are crazy enough to sit at 1.4x, 1.2x, or less -- maybe we could tell the difference between 1080p and 2160p. *IF* we had a projector capable of it, and I doubt it'll be a CRT!!

A sh*t load!!! lol, but still doable with a CRT. you just keep adding them up as resolution goes up. Very Happy

And where will you sit, and how will you hear anything!? Laughing Unless you do a rear-proj setup to get the projectors out of the viewing room, I suspect a quad-CRT blend would not be that pleasant to watch. Assuming you DO ever manage to get the SOB set up!!

To Toshiba, I say, "BRING IT ON!!!"

I'm not interested in it as any sort of panel/direct-view - like everybody has already pointed out, at normal viewing distances, the resolution is worthless. But, give me 2160p projection, baby! Make those damn pixels so small, they're invisible even at < 1x screen widths. Talk about immersion! Whoo hoo! Oh, and hurry up and bring it fast so the people that all had to run out and get rid of their CRT's to buy $6000 RS20's will all want to get rid of their RS20's so I can buy it for .20 on the dollar. Wink

I sit at about 1.2x, and I LOVE it. In fact, I could never go back to sitting further back. I can also tell you for absolutely certain I could tell the difference between 1080p and 2160p even at my 1.2x.

Bring it on!

Without knowing the physical size of the unit the resolution will probably not benefit any buyer.

Even knowing the physical size is still worthless to know whether it will benefit the buyer, Wan; you have to know the distance from which the viewers will be watching the material. It's all about the viewing angle. If it's a 65" display, and you sit 4' from it, then even 2160p will be well within most people's visual acuity. If it's a 42" display, and the buyer sits 8' or 10' away (yes, many will), then obviously it's worthless.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the other obvious use for this... Don't know if the TV will support it, but if it'll take a 2160p input, you could use an outboard processor... How about a FOUR 1080p images all simultaneously displayed? You'd need multiple receivers to do it, but I would think some of you football freaks would be all over this for your living room! Wink

Why would you need multiple receivers? I can do that now with my 65" Mitsubishi RPTV circa 2003. 4 PIP POP 9 PIP POP. I never have other than to see it work, but it does it. Not 1080p of course but it can do the multi image thing on different channels.
