With the advent of BR and HD-DVD came the audio formats; Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. I've been seeking a definitive answer as to what my options are to fully take advantage of the formats. After much seeking I believe I have it sorted out but if someone knows better I would welcome corrections.
What connections will work between player and processor/receiver, etc. On wikipedia I found this:
| Quote: | Dolby TrueHD may be transported to AV receivers in 5.1 or 7.1 channels, at full uncompressed quality, in one of three ways depending on player and/or receiver support[1]:
• Over 6 or 8 RCA connectors as analog audio, using the player's internal decoder.
• Over HDMI 1.1 (or higher) connections as 6- or 8-channel Linear PCM, using the player's internal decoder.
• Over HDMI 1.3 (or higher) connections as the original TrueHD bitstream, with decoding done by the AV receiver. |
To me that boils down to 2 options:
- analog if your player is so equipped and no HDMI on the receiver.
- HDMI is the only digital delivery system. Setting the player to LPCM will use the players decoder (if so equipped), Setting the player to Bitstream will use the receivers decoder (I'm guessing all are capable if equipped with HDMI and claim audio processing).
My question is, Is my interpretation correct? Are all HDMI equipped receivers able to decode DD TrueHD? If my player can decode TrueHD and DTS MA, does it matter what the receiver can decode as long as it has HDMI?
