While I have never been a user of AMD, I cannot ignore the fact that they are about to start selling their Quad core processors for under $100.
Any dedicated AMDers out there?

I've gone back and forth.
They both work, I buy whatever is best bang for the buck at the time.

Let's see benchmarks!
The MegaHz,GigHz race has turned into a cores race.
They could come out with a 16 core chip for $50 but if it doesnt play 1080p it is worthless for us.

For general HTPC use it has become irrelevant.
The cheapest Intel I could buy- a dual core E5200, will play 1080p Bluray sourced MKV files completely in software, no hardware accel required.
Now, for more goodness, more processor power is great.
My overclocked Quad Q6600 will run a sharpening or denoise filter on 1080p, and run full room correction on 8 channels at 48khz (chokes on 8 channels of 96khz, but 6 channels is fine) at the same time.
PCs are getting stupidly fast these days. The biggest bottleneck is the harddrive, and over the next few years solid state drives will take over from the mechanical harddrive.

And the biggest cost is the software.

If you're talking building something yourself, yes.
What about the netbook fad right now...ultra small and ultra low power. Choke on 1080p.

With prices coming down like this I'm sorely tempted to upgrade my 4800+ X2 to a quad core, either that or a few TB of disc space...
Oh choices, choices.

Notebook?
Umm...nup.
I would never do that for a HTPC.

The Athlon x4 series will probably be on par with the original Phenom x4 series. The Phenom x4 series would have to be the worst chips I've seen AMD produce. In my opinion, if you are looking for a cheap quad, don't go with anything that matches a Phenom 1s. I'd go with the Phenom II x4 940 and overclock, or even the 920 (sub-par to Q9400)
As far as the Intel line goes, stay away from any Q8xxx models, to be honest the only thing I would get at this point is a Q9550 or better (within reason).. Haven't had much time to read up on the i5s, and this all has been coming from a gamer's perspective.

Right, and if you are building a virgin PC then you need a full version of Windows and that ain't cheap. But, I'm sure youll conveniently quote an Upgrade price, which isn't a virgin path.
And what would you estimate the lifetime cost of Anydvd HD will be now that they are leechware?

I was about to mention the price of Anydvd. My best friend just bought a new computer with bluray drive and was needing a player solution. I mentioned Anydvd to him and he calls me back and says that he almost pulled the trigger till he noticed that the price was for one year. He decided to just buy an new compliant monitor.
As for CPUs, I was very tempted to go and buy the P55/i5 bundle for $280. The i5 is as fast or faster than the 920. Microcenter is selling the CPU for $160.

Yes, it is true that AnyDVD has moved to a leech-ware business model. Right up there with Evercrack.

I've been an Intel fan for years, but I just heard about these AMD quad cores for under 100. I'm trying to figure out how it might compare to my c2d e6600 @ 3.2 now, and if there are smaller form factor mobos that support it.
