I finally got it mounted and I can't get it to lower. It says on it not to lower until on ceiling. So I attached it to the ceiling, plugged it in, turned it on, loosened the clasps and pressed the down button and it makes a noise like it's running but nothing happens. If I press the up button, it doesn't make any noise, but it is already in the up position. If anybody has any experience with these things, I would appreciate your help.

Did you unlatch the bottom half of the lift?

Yeah, I undid the clasps on the sides that attach the bottom to the top. When the clasps are undone, the safety is released allowing the unit to lower. If I press the safety in it stops functioning. When I let go of the safety, the unit makes a humming sound, not sure if this is the normal sound of the motor, or the sound of the motor being burnt out.

sounds like it's unwinding, maybe the cable is snagged. Try pulling on the lower portion while someone puhes the down button.

Just tried that, and it won't budge. I guess i'm gonna have to take it down, and rip it apart.

Ok, so I took the lift down, and took it apart. I spun the gears by hand, plugged it in, turned it on and she worked. I guess the gears were sticking from sitting for a long time.
