Beta may make you smile, but Mr. Betamax's web site design makes me cry.

WTF? Mr. Beta wants $3295.00 + S/H for a refurbed EDC-55. Why in God's name would anybody spend three grand and some change to buy one of these cameras? I get saving old stuff for prosperity, and I get being a fan of an old format, but when you can buy a new camera that will shoot high definition and even FAR superior SD... But, $3300? Make me understand.
Judas Priest, Jeremy - have him recap that thing, then sell it and take an island vacation with that new HD camcorder you're thinking about! Imagine all the Bacardi and obsolete sh*t you could buy from just the sale of that camera!

Yeah I saw his price. I'm not quite sure where his head is at with that.
I bought mine in 1999 for $3300 guess they hold their value:?:

Just got this response back from Mr. Beta:
| Mr.Beta wrote: |
The unfortunate thing is that to find out would require an inspection, which includes dismantling the camera head. This is a time consuming operation that would run $95.00 with no guarantee that it can be fixed. You would also have to add in your cost for shipping to and from.
Mr.B |
So it looks like about $200 to get it looked at. Then it may not be easy to repair. Anyone here wanna give it a shot? I believe I have the service manual here.

I really need to stop speed reading. I read the above as the following:

No offense there, benareeno.

I was going to say the same thing, but decided against it. There are so many options for cameras that would be better now, and for little more money than it would cost just to fix the old Beta camera! I decided against posting about it, because I don't like harping on Jeremy about it... But... But... He keeps putting it out there and you've opened the door, so here goes...
IMHO, it just doesn't make sense to put money into this old stuff. A film camera, I can see. A projector makes sense, because in many ways, it's still competitive or even better than the new stuff. A deck or camera to be able to play your old tapes, I can see (though I'd be getting any old material transferred off of old analog tape)... But, repairing a camera like this to actually use... It just doesn't make sense. It's 4:3, SD, it's huge, and not really that practical for personal use, anyway... Now, if high quality and creativity are your goals, then there are now far superior options, and honestly for not that much money now. And those other options would be easier to carry, easier to shoot, easier to edit, easier to play back, and the end product would be of FAR higher quality. I just don't see the point in creating content on an old format that's been eclipsed in every way. But, that's just me I guess.

That's the thing. I need to fix this to transfer what I shot for 6 years or so. The ED-Beta decks command a super high price as well. Still considering it. Hmmmm.....
