I've seen it mentioned that when installing new tubes its worth putting a strip of Glass Cloth Tape down each side of the tube so that the electronics have something to grip onto. I've just read in one of Curt's FAQs/How-To's that medical adhesive can also be used ( details here http://www.curtpalme.com/Sony_G90_tube_replacement6.shtm 2nd and 3rd photos down ).

Any one of these better than the other? Medical tape is dirt cheap but Glass Cloth has a high heat resistence, common sense would make me go for the Glass Cloth but can medical tape really be used on tubes without being heated to a crisp?

Thanks,

I believe the correct name is surgical tape.

Heated to a crisp?

The tubes barely get warm to the touch. Not hot.

I must admit that I simply presumed the tubes were hot because they glowed, the surgical tape makes more sense now.

I HATE the tape on the tube necks and do not use it. It inevitabbly winds up snagging a coil when you slide them on and it's not worth the hassle. clamping dire3ctly onto the glass works fine unless you plan to have the PJ mounted in the back of a truck

I don't like the tape either, but I'd still recommend using it. Like most materials, glass has an inherent dimensional instability... It expands and shrinks when it heats and cools. It probably only ever sees a 30 or 40 degree delta in use, but that 30 or 40 degrees is enough. Without the tape, the coil can move over time, drifting away from where you (thought) you locked it down. It's the heating/cooling that is the reason the manufacturers use the tape - not for secure shipping.

NEC's, and I think Sony's have the tape.

Barco's don't (or at least my 808 doesn't).

the coil itself , made of ,metal and plasic, will heat and expand at many times the rate of the glass. So when the tube heats up the coil should only get tighter not loooser.

If the metal band heats and expands more then the glass, then it's going to loosen, not tighten! Besides, it doesn't matter... As you pointed out, they're different materials and expand/contract differently. It's the differential between the two that causes the issue. Use the tape, or don't use the tape. You wouldn't use it. I would.

My 1208 does - but only under the neck board clamp. looks just like medical tape or trainers tape but the adhesive is not as 'gummy" so it peeled off pretty easily.
