So, I didn't end up grabbing that other RPTV. Probably another STK failure and I don't feel like doing more soldersucking just to make fifty bucks or an iffy upgrade.

However, I found a guy offering a 46" Sony (which he recently did an STK swap on, actually!) that works but has some sizzling, which he presumes is arcing due to a short in the HVPS.

So the question is: Is he right about that, and is it a reasonably easy thing to trace down and fix for a guy who isn't experienced with HV stuff? Or is it going to be a fool's errand to fix without a ton of scoping and component-level snooping?

Advice appreciated. Thanks!

Just like in a projector, the fizz or arc noise can come from many places. You have to look for the problem. You may find a fairly simple repair or damaged board and/or parts, to major parts needing replacement. This one would be a shoot from the hip.

Oh, sometimes its only that that tube anode cups need to be reglued.....

Do you have a model?

And also dont forget that the Sony RPTV's were well noted for having tube failures.

It's a KP-46WT500. Supposedly it fires up (err... maybe 'turns on' would be a better term) and shows a picture, but does the whole bacon frying sound thing. So, tubes as of this moment are (if the seller isn't a liar) ok...

TV/Projector: All of them!

I'm guessing the flyback (HV transformer) or focus block has a leak. If it's really dusty, wipe all HV leads with a cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol. If it still sizzles, turn out all the lights, pull the CRT sockets to kill the tubes, and look for blue corona around something. THere's your HV leak.

Curt... hmm, interesting.

The guy wants a hundred bucks for the thing, but says he's flexible - which means I can probably get him down to 80, anyway. 50 would be nice but is probably asking a lot unless I hold out and nobody else bites.

You guys think it's worth a shot to replace the 42" Tosh I have that needs to be re-capped to get rid of a wobble that's not really apparent after warmup? Worth the risk that this guy was a joker when he replaced the STKs and didn't put any thermal compound on? Smile

Well I can tell you for sure that , that model number is listed in the Sony service bulletin as may have eventual tube failure problems..... This problem was so common that Sony extended the warranty to 4 years on these sets...

...and that's exactly the kind of thing I need to know! This forum rocks! Thumbs Up

So, I told the guy I couldn't do the deal. The Tosh works, and it'll be less risky to recap it if I want than to wait for a tube to explode. Plus, CRT RPTVs show up on a fairly regular basis these days, so I'll just hold out for a better deal. Maybe one of those 76" monsters with 9" tubes, or something. Surprised
