Just wondering if a 6pg xtra could easily be turned into a 9pg xtra, and if there is any benefit? Like, would a 9pg xtra be able to do 1080p with custom timings like the xg's?

A 6 PG Xtra will scan to 67khz, which is high enough for 1080i 72 or 96hz, or 720p 72hz, or 1080p 60hz.

Personally I would run 1080i 72hz, maybe 96hz.

The ONLY DIFFERENCE to the 9 PG Xtra is the scanrate, and the point board. The bandwidth is the same, they use the same video path boards.

My pick of the Xtras is a 6 PG Xtra 6200(A) revised model, with the HD-144 lenses. Fitted with a Point Board, it is the newest Xtra, has better lenses, and has some improvements to the Alignment controls.

9 PG Xtras were superseded by the XGs fairly early on, they are the oldest Xtras. The 6200(A) model was made concurrently with the second generation of XGs, they really are the pick of the bunch - I prefer one to an air coupled XG.

You change a 6 to a 9 by changing the system and deflection boards, then add the point board.

I think you'll lose the improvements in the Alignment menu if you do that.

IMO it's just not worth the extra scanrate - that scanrate is useless anyway.

The 6 PGXtra can do 1080P? Does that apply to the Runco relabeled equivalent?

It depends on which 1080p you mean.

Why are you hung up on 1080p? I personally would NOT try a 6 PGXtra/Runco on 1080p/60. It might do it, but you might also kill your deflection board. Regardless, the image will be soft. 720p is a much better resolution for either the 6 or 9PG Xtra, and guaranteed you'll never see the extra detail that you're supposed to get with the 1080p signal.

Yes, if its a re-badged Xtra, they scan to 69Khz, 1080p 60Hz is 67Khz....

1080p 60Hz refresh is just below the upper limit of the 6PG Xtra's firmware. The hardware is the same as the 9PG Xtra, so if you like it, use it, in my opinion.

Using 1080p doesn't necessarily allow you to display more detail, as that *may* be limited by bandwidth capabilities, but at least you're trying ... instead of throwing it out before it even gets to the display device by not using the highest resolution you can...

I always ran 1080i 72hz (~42khz scanrate) on my Xtra, and I run 1080i 96hz (~55khz scanrate) on my XG.

But 720p 72hz is good too.
