I received the below in response to an inquiry about a townhouse condo for rent... In retrospect, I can easily imagine 419 pre-pay scams extending to rental/leasing agreements.
I replied:
"*sigh* How's the weather in Llagos?"

(Note that the phone number included is country code 234, Nigeria. Perhaps the worlds' phone companies should conspire to change it to 419? Twisted Evil )

I mean, really... "To safe the live of peoples from primitive death that claims the souls of younger ages as a result of casual sex gave us transfer to West Africa and we will be away for 8 years or more and this is why we are actually renting out house,"

I was going to bold portions of that sentence, but the whole structure is terrible!

Hello,

God bless you for your interest about my house, yes is still available for rent. I am renting this house to a responsible and neat person or family who has the fear of God and treat my house as his or her own.Presently I and my wife have work for USAID.USAID works in agriculture, democracy & governance, economic growth, the environment, education, health, global partnerships, and humanitarian assistance in more than 100 countries to provide a better future for all.
USAID still faces an uncertain future. In many developing countries, HIV/AIDS and health issues are having a dramatic impact on social cohesiveness and economic strength, blocking the very development goals we seek. Virtually all the new democracies in the world today are fragile; others are democracies more in name than substance. Nearly a quarter of the people living in developing countries, or about one billion people, live in absolute poverty. There are a host of other threats - ranging from terrorism to infectious disease and violent conflict - that challenge us and the developing nations we seek to help. Here is USAID Web address:- www.usaid.gov
USAID efforts to foster world-wide economic growth and increased trade, and tackling cross-border issues such as the spread of HIV/AIDS and trafficking in persons. To safe the live of peoples from primitive death that claims the souls of younger ages as a result of casual sex gave us transfer to West Africa and we will be away for 8 years or more and this is why we are actually renting out house,so if you are interested and will take good care of our house then we will be ready to accept you as our future tenant and family friend. If you really impress me by taking good care of our house then you will be allowed to stay as long as you wish okay.
This is the address of the Single family house: 1113 Thayer Street, Abington MA

So get back to me on how you could take care of our house or perhaps experience you have in renting home. Hope you are okay with the price of US$970/month and $300 for security deposit with hydro, heat laundry facilities, air condition and so on. PETS ARE WELCOME!

I am looking forward to hear from you ASAP so that i can forward you an application to fill out and discuss on how to get the house for rent, also are you ready to rent it now or when?

Await your reply.

Why not ask if operating a whorehouse is on the approved list of things to do? Too far out there? How about a good old grow op? Very Happy

I got a spam forward about this scam. But who the hell looks for Apts. on craiglist. I guess some people got into it but I always got the perception that craigslist was for scammers and hookers.

These guys will look up apts. for rent and then repost the add and hope to get the deposit from you before you realize it isn't their apt!

Coming to that conclusion myself... Trying to do a quick favor for my brothers' chick, with half an hour to kill on a sunday morning.
I identified seven places as meeting her requirements and budget... Four have been flagged for removal.

There's a story in the news recently... (Hearsay warning: this was told to me second hand.) A renter was notified of eviction or lease non-renewall so he emptied out his stuff early and ginned up a fake leasing agreement... Had it leased out three times over before he got caught cashing a deposit check!

The scammer on the above-listed ad replied to my "*sigh*" comment with the second email in their script... A lot more God Bless Yous and please enter a bunch of your personal information on this email.
My reply:
I don't have time to F with this putz wrote:

Please, go away. I don't have time to play with you, although it is well within my nature to make you a case study on 419eater.com

Here's the original ad you stole:
http://www.rentalhouses.com/MA/ABINGTON/thayer-street-278727
The legitamite owner of this property has been notified.

There were seven apartments on boston.craigslist.com that I identified as being appropriate to my needs. You may be interested to know that four of the seven have been flagged for removal due to fraud... Were these four all your handywork, or that of somebody else in an internet café in Llagos?

I've almost never had problems with Craigslist. My wife and I used it to find a few different places in NYC, and there was never a problem; she used it to find work with never a problem - and almost my entire home theater was built from bits on CL.

The only issues I've had are the very occasional (and obvious) scam post, and some bastards that are replying, "I'll take it, do you still have it?" to everything in 'for sale' and then replying with an ad for a free Wii if you respond.

So... yeah - how are you guys finding all this bad stuff on CL? Or is my karma just really excellent? Razz

I've had pretty good luck, too. My wife and have probably bought or sold at least 30-40 items on Craigslist (admittedly in a much smaller metro area than you guys are dealing in), and we've had little trouble. Other than the occasional obvious "Do you still have the item?" scambait (which I just ignore), I've been thrilled with Craigslist. We've sold a ton of kid stuff, and for free!!!

I was looking for a PS3 back in January on CL and Kijiji. It took me weeks of scammers before I found one locally that was on the up and up.

I think ones experience on CL is high dependent on what you are selling/buying and what city you selling it in. Like others I have my some good purchases on CL and sold some stuff (even given away some "junk"). The only problems I have had is some of the obvious scams on my sales of bigger ticket items ($100s rather $10s) and of all things listing in the tools section in my city where my ad was flagged for removal once (perhaps because I always include a link to a higher resolution photo and links are not allowed though it has never been a problem before or since). I relisted what I was selling without a link and got a death threat (really) in an email. Didn't say what their issue was, just that if I did "it" again they would kill me. Thought it had sold and removed the listing. The deal fell though so two months later (was busy) I listed the item again and this time I got a strange email that all it said was "Some people are rude on Craigs and others are crude , can't decide which you are . Oh yes BOTH ". I reread the ad and had several other people do the same none could figure out what someone might take offense too. In any case the item sold and what caused me so much angst on CL? A $175 used Honda generator.

Basically if ebay is the evil dictatorship of the online sales world then CL is the mob rule of the online sales world. My overall experience is that given the lower barriers to entry as compared to ebay you get more whackos , scammers and just plain strange people. But honestly most folks are good in the world and if you use a little common sense you can do well on CL.

What gets me is when they IM you with something like "I saw your profile and want to know better you"...lol. Then they send you a picture of themselves that is actually a porn queen (as if we didn't know who all of the porn queens are ... geez).

The best part is when they say they are in west africa, they are "American", and they are stuck there because "my beloved father die".

Gotta love those scammers.

Confrontational responses are auto-generated by SPAMbots to circumvent the CL once-is-enough email anonymizer... Respond to the bait and your valid email will be sold to every internet pharmacy mailing list in the world Wink

Ah clever lucky I just didn't respond to either time is too short. On a different note here is a new CL scam (might have to take back that comment about people being good):

The new scan essentially sends you a number to call saying they have question about your item. That number is either a preimum call or directs you one and you get a $5-10 charge on your phone bill..... I basically now ignore any email that does not refer to my "item" by its name.
