The 708 has some circuit modifications done to make the chassis more reliable. The 708 also added the IRIS auto convergence camera as an option. The Data 708 also increased the max H scan frequency to 69 Khz. |
The 708 has a slightly higher contrast ratio and more video bandwidth so it will accept a higher res input. I've never seen the 2 side-by-side though.

The 708 used two different tubes, either the 180 Toshiba tubes or hte sharper and more expensive P16 tubes that were also a bit brighter.
Phosphor area on the 708 tubes (either type) was larger than the Sony 07MS tubes which is what the 701 used.
The 708 is a more desirable set, but according to VDC, both types of 708 tubes are now discontinued, and finding good used ones is getting hard.

I wouldn't buy a 7xx Barco these days.
I'd aim higher.

I had a 701 data. The 708 would be great provided nothing goes wrong! I think you may have a lot of trouble finding parts. Also, with the ES tubes that the 708 has, unless they are new tubes, you may find its not that sharp. The 708 would be slightly brighter. I sold my 701 and got a Marquee 8500. Best bang for the buck and plenty of parts. Real easy to service too as its so modular. You just have to get used to the larger size and weight of the Marquee.

I parted out 25 Barco Vision 708. I have everything out of those sets, and they will swap to a Data 708, so parts will not be a problem for the next 10 years.

I have a 708 built in 2002, puts out one great image. It's a transition machine between the 708 and the Cine 7, has the hardware of the Cine 7 including massive amounts of control over the image. Has P16 tubes and only 1K hours on set.
