I'm building a 16 x 9 screen soon and I think I'll just make it out of blackout material to keep it cheap. Where do you normally find this stuff?

Has anyone ever seen it 12 feet wide?

Fabricland (Canada) or Joanne's (US) sell it on 54" bolts. You can buy any length as long as the width is 54".

Note: The stuff stretches so you can have a viewing area 54" high with this... it'll stretch a few inches to let you staple it to a frame and still maintain a 54" screen. (That's what I did).

Thanks Kal.

Unfortunately I didn't consider the height requirement for a screen so large. 12 foot wide would make it 6.75 feet tall or 81 inches. I have a fabricland across the street from me. I've been in there once in 20 years. Guess I should have thought of that first.

In the "build a screen for $75" post he has material 80 inches high. I just found this link:
http://www.comforthouse.com/blacdrapline.html

They have it 154" x 80" that would make for a nice 138" x 77" screen. Alowing a couple of inches for stapling on the frame.
Hmmm not quite my entire wall but close.

How's the picture quality on the blackout material?

FYI: If they have 154x80" fabric, odds are you can still make an 80" high screen. They stuff stretches easily. You may even be able to make an 82" high screen.

How'd the picture quality? Unpainted it doesn't have the same pop... painted, I love it and have no desire to get a replacement Stewart 1.3 screen (the one I originally wanted to get).

Good to know it streches. Then I should be able to go 139 x 78 with a couple of inches to staple. I forgot to include the border in my calculations.
Nice 2 inch border made of velvatine would look great.

Now I have to figure out a stand for this screen 'cause I don't want to drill to may holes in the (rented) wall

If you want a really giganto screen, Rose Brand has some 110" wide BO ...

Kal, what did you paint your BO with? Basic Behr UPW, or something more interesting? I keep threatening to do something with my BO to give it more pop, but since I don't have a sprayer it's still just talk. Did you use a HVLP sprayer or a generic Wagner-type airless?

Thanks for the link Gary.

I could make a 4:3 screen 128" wide x 96" tall with that ( 8 foot high ceilings here ) Hmmmm maybe....

No I'd better stick to 16:9 then I'll have room under the screen for the centre channel.

I just demoed my Sony 1252 to a neighbor last night. His comment was WOW I need one of these for hockey season. lol I may have another CRT convert. I'll have to tell him about the 128" wide screen option.

I used BEHR UPW watered down with Floetrol. Lots of coats very carefully with low-pile rollers.

See here for the full painting instructions I followed:

FYI, I was able to stretch a 54" b/o cloth from JoAnn's out to about 58". It's very stretchy cloth and you MUST stretch it out a bit, or it'll sag on you!

So an 80" height cloth would probably stretch out to 90" easily. Smile
