TV/Projector: All of them!

Posted: Fri Jul 17, 2009 4:29 am    Post subject: I ISF'ed a projector today!

I went out of town to Gibsons, BC today with the esteemed Richard Stokes of local ISF/CRT projector (and flat screen) fame, to go tweak/ISF a Runco 992 Ultra installed new in 2000 by Dave Menzies of Architectual Audio Video in North Vancouver.

As we drove the 66 Km (40 miles) from the ferry to the house, we swapped customer and contractor horror stories. We've all been in the A/V industry locally for over 20 years, so we all know the good, the bad and the ugly, managers, sales guys, installers and suppliers.

So we get to the gated house, got buzzed in, and then drove down the meandering driveway to the house. On the right past the gate was the small cove with the boat dock. Further down to the left was the full size tennis court. Further to the right was a wooden train that was probably 20'-30' long and about 5' high, festooned with Christmas lights for when the season is right.

We then got to the roundabout at the front door.

The projector was in an RP install, with a 9' wide screen, but the back room was so large, that no mirrors were used, it was a straight shot. THe room also housed the satellite/cable distribution, 2 racks for the HT, some data cabling, and the 1000+ DVD collection.. part of it anyways.

Richard set up his Sencore/Calman stuff, I connected the HDFury2 to the new Denon receiver, while Dave set up the Sony BR DVD player. 1080p locked rock solid, even though it was a 33' HDMI run. Plug and play. While I had watched Richard at work before, this time I was full hands on, and have a reasonable understanding now as to how the Sencore/Calman works.

While the 6500K was more or less all over the map, to the eye it was pretty darn close. What was interesting is that the gamma curve was perfect.. without gamma correction, go figure, so we concentrated more on the gamma than trying to achieve 6500k. We put it down to a bit of tube wear, as the customer was running 75 contrast when we walked in.

Final outcome.. the picture at 1080p via BR was awesome. While we set up the 1080i feed from the satellite receiver, the receiver wasn't working save for the onscreen menus, but it will end up being upscaled to 1080p via the Denon, which hadn't been completed by the time we finished the ISF part, and had to catch the ferry back.

What a house though, too bad I didn't take my camera.

Dammit, Curt! How do you NOT have a camera with you when you go on installs or maintenance trips like this? This is at least the 3rd or 4th time you've told us about some kick-ass house/theater/install and you don't have pictures. Could you at least get a decent cell phone with a camera so you could share? Wink

Next time Curt is going to be telling us all about the naked women running around. "Sorry guys I brought the camera, but I was so distracted I forgot I even had it".

Deron.
