I've got my hd dvd player hooked up to my projector using an hdfury. I'm sending the pj a 1080i signal. Is there a low cost option out there that will pass the signal, but alow me to sharpen it a bit.

It's just an ECP 4500. I was using it with an htpc and slight sharpening through ffdshow. I just got tired of the clumsey menus and behavior of a pc. I've got hd145 lenses on the projector. Now, i'm just looking for something that will leave the signal pretty much alone, aside from a little sharpening. I wish there was something like an external ffdshow box that I could plug into, but not have to deal with the rest of the pc.

Some Extron boxes have a "peaking" control which I think is related to sharpening, not really sure though because I don't own one, just read about it a little bit. But you could look into that option.

Depending on your setup, the peaking control in an Extron box may be just the ticket, or it may do nothing or even degrade the image. It totally depends on where your softness is coming from and whether the sharpness the peaking adds will be what you're looking for.

FYI, the peaking control in an Extron box is like the sharpness control in a tv, or the treble knob on a stereo... It boosts high-frequencies in relation to mid- and low-frequency content. It's typically used to offset the HF attenuation in a long cable run. Just like the sharpness control on a TV, it usually just adds ringing, unless you truly have some HF roll-off.

You may just be running in the limit of how sharp the ECP can be. In that case, nothing outside the projector in the signal path is going to make it sharper.

It would be cheap to try, though. You should be able to find an Extron interface for <$50.

I actually have a 202 that was sitting in my basement that I never used. I'm gonna try it out.

Would the extron have similar results to when I was using ffdshow, and sharpening the image slightly?

I'm not looking for much, and i've got the ecp tuned mechanically as far as I can take it.

Yes, it should be a similar effect to what you'd get with a simple sharpen filter in ffdshow, I'd think.

No harm in trying it out!

Gee, let me take a really wild a$$ guess here--could it be the really effing old 7" ES machine?!?!?

Dude, just pony up. Don't waste $50 or even $20 on an extron (but if you really want to, I may have one I can sell you). Just suck it up and spend $400-500 to get a used PJ that will blow away your current PJ.

This is just my bedroom pj. I've got an xg135lc in the basement theater. I know everybody knocks these little 7" ES machines, but i've had the picture from this looking pretty darn good. I pulled the htpc from the chain, and now my image is a little too soft. I've already got an extron, so i'll try it tonight.

If anyone cares my video chain is this:

dvd player hdmi to hdfury to rtc2200 to pj. I guess the extron will be added after the rtc2200. Does this seem like way too many connections?

It looks like the extron 202 did the trick. Thanks for the help.

I spoke too soon. The extron still sharpens the image to where I am happy, but I noticed that the green is only lighting the raster, there is no image on it. I'm thinking my box is no good. Has anyone seen this problem before? The box is an Extron 202 plus.

Check your cables first and then check the DIP switches
