|
|
So I have a screen dilemma but it is CRT specific so I think it belong here rather than screens.
I'm completely redoing my theater in a new room
With a New projector Runco 1100 (barco 1209s) With a VP50 scaler.
I want to run a 2.35:1 Constant height setup but according to my reading with CRT projectors the preferred resolution for this would be 1920X800.
What I want to know is how would this effect HDTV content when run at this res out of the scaler.
I watch majority 2.35:1 movies both blu ray and DVD but also some HDTV.
I don't want to sacrifice HDTV resolution but think 16:9 should be narrower than movies in 2.35
But not at the cost of major quality reduction in HDTV. Or I will just go for a larger 16:9 screen and deal with HDTV being huge when 2.35:1 content is just right.
so my question is for those that have CRT projectors capable of 1080p with constant height is how does HDTV look scaled to the 1920x800 resolution displayed with black bars on the side?
I don't think the VP50 is capable of doing 2500x1080p and I'm not sure the projector could handle it anyway.
I need to decide on screen size so i guess I better set it up and try it but I was curious if some of you have already tried this and may have some guidance.
And I'm open to other suggestions.
I have to say I have this projector on the floor on a cart with a real rough setup and it is spectacularly better than my old 6pg+

Hello B, When watching 2.40 movies on blu-ray only 800 lines of resolution are being shown, actually the black bars on top and bottom are wasted bandwidth. To allow the PJ to use less bandwidth we only use the active area being scanned(the movie) . this is called active area scanning. The 1920 lines are all there so your scaler should be set up for that. here is a thread on AAS from AVS [urlhttp://archive2.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=737385]How to optimize your PC or scaler for CRT[/url] .
I would go with a Constant Image Width , this way the 16:9 material will wear the width of the tube instead of the center as it would in a CIH set up. so both 2.35 and 1.78 will have the same width but different heights. I think this is the best screen set up for CRT unless you are blending two PJ's

Thanks for your input.
I understand the idea of only 800 lines on a 2.35 blu ray being needed but in my opinion those movies should be wider than 1.78 content. I guess this is personal preference but it just feels right
Your idea of constant width is my plan B as wear on the tubes is of minor concern to me as well I plan to watch mostly 2.35 movies but I could see watching more and more HDTV in there after its all setup.
