I'd like to see a well set-up CRT in action. I've been giving thought to ditching my Optoma HD70 and going CRT, but I'd like to see one first.
I could also head up to Seattle too. Thanks everyone.
Cheers.

Maybe I should not have specified "well set-up" CRTs. I kid because I love.
But seriously, I'd love to see one before buying.

there's 3 9500Lc's blended on a ginormous screen at the Mt. St. Helen's visitor center but they look pretty awful. The 3 center tubes were roasted last time I was there.
If you're in Denver some time you can check out my Marquee on a more reasonable sized screen.

There must be a few guys here that are in Portland or at least Seattle that can show you a nice setup. Keep bumping the thread - somebody should chime in. If worst came to worst, Curt is in Vancouver - I'm sure he'd be willing to show you his setup. If you travel at all, I'm sure you could find somebody, too... There are people from all over the country (and world) on this forum.

Thanks for the invite draganm. If I'm ever in the area I'll be sure to call on you.
Good idea ecrabb. Curt is not far from me and I could make it a one-stop shopping, auditioning trip. Buy right there on the spot if I like what I see. Curt's showroom.

I have a lowly Runco IDP980(NEC PG6) I'd show you but I still only have 480i upscaled to 480p running on it.
Not overly impressive.
I myself would like to see a 9 incher CRT running that was well set up... IN MY BASEMENT!!!

You need a Bluray player and an HDFury1, badly.

OMSI uses six Barco 1209s for their planetarium setup, but it's not an HT setup. Talk to Jim Todd there, he and I have been doing business for years. Not sure if they use CRT elsewhere at OMSI.
Dragamn, let me know about crappy installs like that one. I'll call them on MOnday and see if I can score a s/call.

That in itself would be a bigger improvement that simply running line-doubled crap into a 9 inch machine, a lot cheaper too

Hey Loudmouse. I'd like to see your install. It would give me an idea of what I can expect from a CRT.
Curt. I'll give Todd over at OMSI a call. Thanks for the heads-up.
Think I'll not bother going to check out the Mt. St. Helens exhibit. Ha.

Actually, DO go to the Mt St Helens exhibit to see if they still have the projectors there. Then say 'hey, I know this guy in Vancouver that comes down to Portland all the time..... could be worth some $$ to you if I score a sale. he

I sat down and watched this demo, they run the center part of the screen first and then open it up to about 40 feet wide. The center part of the image was toasted so I immediately thought AHA blend. So after the show I walked up front and looked back over the balcony housing the PJ's . Sure enough 3 marquees with a like a friking POUND of dirt settled on them. I'm not joking, it was either ash from the Volcano or dead skin cells from 10,000 people. I don't think it would even be healthy to breathe up there without a mask, you sure wouldn't want that crap in your lungs.

IT is by no means even a hint of what a really good CRT image can be. If you go, buy one of those cheap $50. used Fury's off the FS section and take it over there with a decent DVD or Blue Ray player assuming Loudmouse would be willing to set-up a secondary memory block for the HD signal. A 6PG should throw a pretty good image at 1080i

I agree!
I know I have the potential for a decent low budget theater with just a few more pieces of equipment. My last projector was a Sony D50 with the two component inputs already built in. So easy to set up it was silly. The Runco is a much better projector but only has the RGBHV input. I've been looking for a scaler/transcoder on the cheap to get at least 1080i component from my HD cable box to the projector. The last one I got was a Runco unit that came with a "dead" 50" plasma. Long story short, I easily got the plasma running and now need the control box to run it.
If (when) I'm lucky enough to find a 9" machine I would have to go 1080p over HDMI right away to do it justice. In the meantime I'll keep looking for someone "throwing out" their old 1080i component setup.
