Hi Everyone, About 4 years ago I decided to convert my 18' x 13.5' living room into a dedicated home theater, and since I've had to do this on a budget, I've been assembleing used gear. The amps that I bought are older Yamaha professional series. I have two P2201's and two PC1002's. I chose these because they have very good specs, good power, convection cooled ( I don't need any extra fans ),and they were popular in recording studios.
I have no experience with pro amps and didn't realize there might be a problem, until I started reading through a P2201 manual, and found out that HiFi and SemiPro gear operates at -10dBv and pro gear at +4dBm. The manual also stated "Note that a HiFi unit capable of +4db (1.23 Volts) maximum output into a high impedence, does not possess adequate drive for 600 ohm circuits with nominal +4dBm level requirements. Thus, HiFi equipment is usually incapable of driving professional equipment to it's full rated output, at least not without first reaching a high level of distortion"
After reading this, I have bought Henry Engineering Matchboxes to convert my Sherbourn PT-7000 outputs to pro levels. Some of this I understand, and some of it I don't. So I have a couple of questions.
The Matchboxes have unbalanced RCA inputs and balanced XLR outputs. The XLR inputs on the PC1002's are balanced but the XLR inputs on the P2201's aren't. I read that they can be converted with external transformers. Do I need to do this, or is there a cable solution ? Also, will upgrading to a Pre/Pro with balanced outputs not work ?
Sorry this was so long ( especially for me since I can't type ) Thanks

Have you tried just operating them together to see if there really is a problem?
I'm using a mix of consumer gear and pro gear and have never given this issue a thought. My preamp is a technics and has been replaced with a Mac 134 surround pre. From there I go to a pair of Yamaha F1030 crossovers and out to a Bose 1800 which replaced a bose 1801, a Phase linear 400, a BGW 150, an Altec Lansing 9445, and a Haffler DH 500. There's a local guitar shop that carries a good selection of cables so I just bought ones that fit. There's mix of RCA, 1/4 phone, and XLR. I just plugged them in and adjusted till it sounded OK.
