"Every name dies, not every man really lives"

Mel's private life has taken some odd-ball turns over the last few years (the anti-semetic drunk cheating on his wife and knocking up his girlfriend director/movie star...), but let's not dwell on that shall we? Wink I still remember when he made this phenominal movie - absolutely one of the my favourites.

I'm actually happy that they waited a couple of years before coming out with this in Blu-ray. It hopefully means that all of the early teething pains that some studios had with Blu-ray is all a thing of the past so it'll hopefully be one fantastic transfer without any edge enhancement or excessive softening/grain reduction or other isues.

Bring it on! Coming September 1, 2009. (Release date has been officially announced now by the studio).

Amazon.com Pre-order link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NQRE0K?ie=UTF8&tag=curtpalmecrtp-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000NQRE0K

Pre-ordering has benefits: If for any reason the price goes down (even for only a day), you get that lowest price even if the price has gone back up at the time it ships. This actually works! I've saved hundreds of dollars over the last year or two due to this pre-order price guarantee. Case in point: I pre-ordered the Generation Kill mini-series a month or so ago for $60 and it's currenly on a short sale at $46. Even though it'll likely go back up to $60 before it ships to me, I'll still only pay $46. Very nice.

Kal,

I believe you mean "so it'll hopefully be one fantastic transfer with(out) any edge enhancement or excessive softening/grain reduction or other isues."

Right?

Release date removed from topic title. It seems that no official date has actually been announced.

Amazon now has Braveheart on Blu-ray up for pre-order. No release date set yet. My guess in early fall.

Link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NQRE0K?ie=UTF8&tag=curtpalmecrtp-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000NQRE0K

Pre-order early to get the best possible price. You get the lowest price between the time you order and the time it ships (even if the price only goes down for a day).

Seems that the Sept 1, 2009 release date is also back on.... (it was leaked early - I actually got an email from the publishing company to remove it from our forum).

--------------

Paramount has officially announced plans to bring the Academy Award-winning 'Braveheart' to Blu-ray in September.

The Mel Gibson epic will hit high-definition on September 1 as part of Paramount's new premium Blu-ray Sapphire Series line.

The 2-disc set will feature 1080p video, a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack, and over two hours of new content including:

• Interactive Timelines—Three distinct timelines featuring a combination of video, images, text and audio that can be accessed linearly or randomly.

o Production: A comprehensive chronology of the motion picture from conception through theatrical release, from a behind-the-scenes point of view.

o Historical: Chronological modules feature Scotland’s greatest patriot, along with historical places, figures and events surrounding his life and struggle.

o Fiction: A comprehensive timeline identifying the chronological events of the film.

• Braveheart: A Look Back— Features new interviews with members of the cast and crew reminiscing about their experiences making the film and its enduring impact on cinema.

• Smithfield: Medieval Killing Fields—Relates the remarkable history of Smithfield, which for centuries was regularly filled with the roars of crowds, regal fanfares and rowdy games. Smithfield is also known as the site of William Wallace’s execution, along with other terrifying spectacles when heretics, rebels and criminals were put to death.

• Battlefields of the Scottish Rebellion— Two major Scottish battlefields, Falkirk and Bannockburn, will be presented as 3D models that can be explored for further investigation into the military strategies and timetables employed in each. Topography, weapons, troop movements, and leadership data can also be accessed. An alternate playing mode will allow the story of each battle to unfold in an “automated” fashion, much like the interactive dioramas displayed at historical site museums around the world.

Yeah, seems new. They have 3 movies due out on this series: Braveheart, Gladiator, Forrest Gump.
Just another marketing ploy to make use think there's something "special" about this series.

I was secretly hoping it was like a "Superbit" version of blu-ray... wishful thinking.

Are you finding issues with the bitrates of movies Gino? In general I've been pretty ecstatic with the quality of Blu-ray. My biggest pet-peeves of DVD are mostly gone:

- Too low of a bit rate (causing macro-blocking). I never see that anymore with Blu-ray.
- Edge enhancement. It's very rare on Blu-ray. It was horrible on DVD.

I'd say that 90%+ of my complaints are due to simply studios not taking the time to clean up transfers or simply re-releasing all 2K transfers to Blu-ray that really aren't as good as they could be. Not a big deal as you can bet if the movie's popular they'll redo another transfer later (if even possible).

One bad thing with Blu-ray seems to have mostly gone away: Filtering. Some earlier titles (ex: Patton) applied too much high pass filtering to soften up and reduce grain to the point of taking away detail. That one scared me for a while because studios were only doing what the ignorant public wanted: That is, create 100% blemish-free transfers (including removing film grain).

No problem, but I wouldn't oppose the idea, who knows what extra it could bring to the table

Braveheart on Blu-ray ships today!

Reviews are starting to float around and the word is that it's a phenominal looking transfer. Way to go!

A quote from digitalbits.com:

Quote:
The video quality of Braveheart on Blu-ray is... in a word... breathtaking. The colors are lush and accurate. Contrast is spot-on perfect. And the detail visible in the image is just wonderful. The quick flit of arrows, the glint of individual links of chainmail armor, the subtle textures of leather and cloth... it's all just delightful. By the time Wallace and his men ride onto the field of battle at Stirling, and you see the crumbled blues of the war paint on their faces, you will be absolutely won over by this presentation. I've simply never seen the film looking this good before. Not once, even in theatres. It's just perfectly nuanced and natural looking - absolutely first-rate for a catalog title of this relatively recent vintage. The Dolby TrueHD audio quality is a near-match to the video, with a very smooth and natural soundfield that impresses as much in quiet, atmospheric moments as it does in the midst of battle. If you're a fan, the A/V presentation quality of Braveheart on Blu-ray is just COMPLETELY pleasing - so much so that you're likely have a strong emotional response to the quality as you watch. And that's EXACTLY as it should be.

Order Braveheart on Blu-ray from Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NQRE0K?ie=UTF8&tag=curtpalmecrtp-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000NQRE0K

Gladiator on the other hand (which also ships today) isn't doing as well. See: http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=205711#205711
