|
|
I use a Sony BD S5000ES directly to Moomes Sony HDMI 1.3 in a Sony 1292. The S5000 has a lot of settings for colorspace, but I don't know which are the best. I have read this very interesting article at audioholics about colorspace on Blu Ray discs here: http://www.audioholics.com/tweaks/calibrate-your-system/hdmi-black-levels-xvycc-rgb
They say, all video discs are encoded as YCbCr (4:2:0, 8 Bit) and this should be the right setting for the player. But all CRT projectors work with RGB and the input card converts every input signal to analog RGB. I tried several settings but it only confuses me.
All forthcoming settings were with activated gamma boost.
1. Settings for RGB or YCbCr at Auto, 8, 10 or 12 Bit at Auto, xvYCC off: the lights at the input card shows 12 Bit and YCbCr 4:4:4 with YCbCr range 16-235. This looks good, but is relatively dark with oversaturated red colour (I didn't calibrate it yet)
2. manually set it to 8 Bit and YCbCr 4:2:2, xvYCC off, maybe not so good as in point 1 above, but I'm not sure.
3. manually set it to 12 Bit and RGB 4:4:4, range 0-255, xvYCC off. The picture is brighter as the other settings, but sometimes it seems a little diffuse, as it is a DVD and not a Blu Ray (maybe this was the SuperBitMapping option from the S5000, I lost the track on several other settings)
Please I need advice for the best starting point from where I can calibrate the picture. What is technically the best setting in my chain?

thanks moome for the advice.
But why is the picture output with RGB 16-235 (in RGB bypass mode, Button "B") so much brighter than YCbCr (Range 16-235, Button "A")?
I found a difference in the included manual versus the version on Curt's website. Button "B" on my manual is "RGB bypass mode" and at the download-version "Active DVI-RGB 0-255 range". Does this mean that if the BD-player put out YCbCr or RGB 16-235 I have to choose "A" and for RGB 0-255 i should use "B"? Maybe I used the wrong setting with RGB 16-235?
Thanks

the B is for DVI-RGB 0-255 only, if you use YCbCr, it will no effect~
