Hi all i've recently bought a Sony D50 for a cheap price of £150 and a 80" fixed screen for £26.

I wanted to set up a cheap home cinema and after playing around with the projector i'm finding images that are very dark and is hard to make out anything in dark scenes. I have seen the gamma increasing boxes on this site and thought they would definatle help but am reluctant to spend the nearly $200 to get one. I know it's said that a 1.2-1.3 gain is perfect but was wondering if i bought this for example

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PANOVIEW-GRAYWOLF-92-FIXED-PROJECTOR-SCREEN_W0QQitemZ250407501301QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_AudiVideoElectronics_Video_Electronics?hash=item250407501301&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A7%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

That has a 1.8 gain would it help with the detail in the dark scenes?

Cheers

And remember i'm new to CRT's

No absolutely not. A gray screen will only make it darker. Read the following link.

THe D50 isn't a light cannon but mine looks plenty bright enough on a Stewart 1.3 gain 110" 4:3 screen. (95" 16:9 )

Does your brightnes change if you ramp it from all the way down 0 to all the way up 100?

What is your source? You may need to change that in the menu. Also try adjusting your CLAMP setting in the menu.
