|
|
Anyone that knows the old Advent screens were far advanced for their time on high gain for a low output PJ. The screen surface got easily discolored or damaged with no easy solution in sight. I went as far as called metal suppliers for a sheet of aluminum which is cost prohibitive to replace screen surface. See my thread in screens for a fabric option.
I came across a cheap and high quality roll of aluminum used for attic insulation. It's size is 48" x 125' which should replace many screen surfaces for Advent or Kloss curved screen. Two pieces will be needed for overlap.
Product is good quality and tear resistant as alum is double ply with thread reinforcement in a diamond pattern. Fingerprints don't seem to effect material, you may want to use gloves to be sure a clean surface .
Hotspotting may occur, I will try to post pics when my PJ is running. If does occur off center viewing may help. This post may be of interest to anyone doing 3-D PJing? Read somewhere these need a high gain surface. May be good for an Out side screen too. This should help anyone with a lower Lumen older PJ in general.
product is : Reflectix
Radiant Barrier
RB48125
Cost is $65 to $70 a roll and should last you for years at Home Depot in insulation and attic fan area.

I tried the foil against da-lite high power screen with a gain of 2.5 , I use d a HD PJ for quick comparison. The foil is probaly only good for low def older PJs, you lose def with foil and thread pattern. The screen raster was lost and cant be seen on foil. The light reflected back was several times more, gain in general area of ten probaly without measurements. really for PJs with 300 or less lumens. A lot of work is needed to work foil by hand, or under pressure by roller to get creases out. PJ will probaly work best directly across or under screen. Try this if you want but I'm leaning toward the metallic fabric as a better and easier solution.
