Dumb question.. is the upgrade to 1.3 a difference in the actual connector or is it a software issue?

Can i upgrade my bdp s1 to hdmi 1.3???

No.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_BDP-S1

"The supplied HDMI connection is version 1.2 and does not support Deep Color or Bitstream out for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio. This feature is not capable of being added later."

Ain't it fun being an early adopter?

I wouldn't worry too much about the Deep Color, since there's still no content that will take advantage of it (at least at the source device). The bitstreaming is definitely a bummer, but unless you're going to pick up a new AVR or processor with advanced audio, no biggie there, either. When you do, you'll probably want a better BD player, anyway. Wink Just put the BDP-S1 in your bedroom or living room and get a new player when you're ready to upgrade the AVR/processor.

The price of being first to market. That was Sony's first generation Blu-ray player.

The wiki does say that with the right firmware it will internally decode Dolby True HD. I assume it would operate like the PS3 and send multi-channel LPCM to a receiver capable of accepting that. Maybe if it has enough horspower under the hood it can in the future decode and send DTS-MA as well.

Apparently HDML 1.2 cannot bitstream the higher res audio, also a limitation of the PS3. But with the right AVR that can accept multi-channel LPCM does it matter?

Correct. HDMI 1.2 cannot bitstream lossless audio. The PS3 can however bitstream lossless audio.

From what I was reading, the PS3 actually is HDMI 1.3... The audio shortcoming is due to some other limitation... Question If you read this page:
http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Features/BluRayMovies

A footnote says:
Quote:
A device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 Ch. is required to output 7.1 Ch. audio, supported by Dolby TrueHD or a similar format, from the HDMI OUT connector. This system does not support output from the DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. audio is output from a 5.1 or lower channel.

So, the way I'm reading that is that you can output 7.1 from the PS3, but only as LPCM, and not as a DTS-HD 7.1 bitstream, right? If you DO output as a bitstream, I wonder what happens... Dropped channel? Bad stream/no audio? Downmix? I thought I ran it that way... Hell, it might actually be set up that way now. Damn, this stuff if complicated compared to the "old days"...

From what I have read the PS3s are limited by Sony's choice of HDMI chip. One forum said it was a Silicon Image HDMI chipset SiI 9132 which supposedly is not capable of bitstrreaming the hi-res audio. Researching this leads to contradictory findings though.

Other sources indicate the hardware limitation as well.

Maybe the newer models have newer hardware?

Not that I don't believe you, but where did you get your info? I have a PS3 so I would love to hear this news.

Drool. D2V + P5 = Kal very happy. (Someday)

Actually, if I'm going to dream I might as well go: D2V + P5 + P2 + extra set of surrounds (so that I can do 7.1)
