|

My XG 135 died yet again. Seems like it breaks at least once or twice a year. This time I get a fault code of either a 63 or 6d. not exactly sure, because the numeric on the right is not either a 6 or a d. The unit powers up for about 5 seconds, then shuts down. The only thing I have tried is to recycle the power.
First, can you help decipher the fault code, and then what is the problem and solution?
Thanks

I guess my original question was pretty stupid. The projector is upside down and the fault code would be E9. Almost embarrassing enough to not come back. Guess trying to crawl inside the hush box to read the back of the projector was more than my simple brain could handle. I have reviewed the error codes from here. http://www.curtpalme.com/docs/NECXG_Error_Codes.pdf
The fault codes states: "When overcurrent detector circuit operates in F-DRIVE PWB (Error in F-DRIVE PWB/WAVE PWB). What sort of trouble shooting can be done? Does this fault cause the projector to shut down after being started after a few seconds? Would this be a simple or complex fix?
Thanks

The F board has failed. I've got spares, or can repair yours.

I do not know which is the F board. Is this an easy fix?

Curt, I have had you repair boards out of this projector before. I just need to know if it is worth the money and effort to replace another one. Is the F board something I can remove and replace easily?

Before you do this, are you CERTAIN the error code is F9?
So far the error code has been:
-63
-6d
-E9
None of which make any sense.
Oh, and if it keeps failing, how good is the mechanical setup? And how hot is it running in that hushbox?

It is a legitimate question about the error code. I admit that I spaced out on reading the numbers upside down. I will take a picture tonight and post to verify.
An equally good question is about the hush box. I installed the hush box back in 2002. During that time I measured the temperatures at some of the hot spots. There was thread on AVS I had that discussed the temps. The temps were hotter with the hush box closed versus open, but not significant if I recall. I have a thermometer installed inside the hush box and monitor the temperature of the air at the exhaust hole in the ceiling. When the neck board went bad lat year, I changed the exhaust fans because I was concerned that possibly the temperatures were too high. I do not recall exactly the cfm rating of the old fans, but there were two that sucked air from the hush box. I replaced the smaller fans with a larger bathroom exhaust fan. I sealed off any gaps at the exhaust and fan with trusty duct tape. This change made a difference and the temperature the thermometer reads dropped 5 to 10 degrees. I have not done a temperature map again because I am fairly confident the projector is getting sufficient ventilation.

I tried to take a picture of the fault window... Flash was too bright and w/o too dim. The failure code is F9.
I believe Curt that the F board is bad. Where is the F board and is it difficult to replace?

Keep in mind that the C and F boards run really hot. They are one of the most common failure areas of the XG. For some reason the astig boards and V boards seem to fail less, I guess they don't run as hot.

Curt, how much for a replacement F board?
I have not tried to pull the board yet, but it appears there is a chip mounted to a heat sink. Are there any tricks in getting this board out and back in?
