|

Here's the deal: I got a XG 1350, 2 Ampro 3300's and some other old-ass Ampro for dirt cheap ($300). The Ampro's are ok, but I hate messing with them. Love the XG, but the tubes suck bad. Recently had an offer of tubes come my way. Would love to step up to a 9" machine, but I think this might be the next best thing.
Can I use G70 tubes in an XG? Seeing as how the G70 is an LC machine and my XG is AC, can I convert my XG to LC? What do I need to get this done? New lenses? Anything else?
Sorry if this has been covered, I've seen a couple posts going the other way - XG to G70, but not G70 to XG.

One other thing, please mention how much each of the conversion pieces would cost if you know - ballpark is fine. Out of respect for the seller, I won't mention the price of the tubes - but I need to make sure that tubes plus all the hardware (if possible) doesn't make it a waste of funds. Thanks!

I'm really familiar with XG's both AC and LC and have only see pictures of the G70 so that's my background in answering your question..
I'm almost certain you can't take a G70 tube with it's mounting hardware and install it in an XG of either kind. You would need to make the G70 tube bare (remove the LC chamber) and the mount the XG mounting hardware which you could source from your current XG tubes and with that you would end up with an XG AC with 'new' tubes. Some people are able to make the hardware swap DIY but in my experience it's very hard and a job better left to the folks at Video Display Corp who may do it for ~$100/tube but that's something to check with them.

I'm not sure how hard it is to remove the XG hardware but pulling the tube out of a G70 housing should be very easy as they are only clamped in with bolts.
I think it would be awesome if you could use the tubes in their housings and have an LC machine. I'm sure this would require new tube mount plates and HD-18 lenses but if possible it may very well be worth the effort.

Yes, you could remove the G70 tubes from their housings, and do the same for the old XG tubes, and use them (I did a neck board mod, but it may not be needed). Such a waste though.
But you could also search for a set of HD-18 lenses, and with a bit of elbow grease and ingenuity, you could fit them to the XG. It would require major chassis mods, and you would have to be running a hushbox as the covers wouldn't fit.
I would just sell the lot and buy a LC machine.
