Okay, I see many direct view CRT rear projection tv's on craigslist from anywhere between $0 and a $bazillion. I would like one for my son to play video games on and save projector tube wear. I don't even know where to begin. I like the idea of picking up large direct view CRT for free that has convergence issues or something. Is there a certain brand/model that will do HD but has a common but easily repaired issue? Not looking for anything fancy, just something to play Madden on.
Thoughts, suggestions, any ideas?

Just to clarify, direct view and rear projection are 2 different beasts. I take it though you are talking rear projection, CRT based. Do yourself a favor though, if you find a rear projection LCD or DLP, stay clear. As far as whats better or not, it would be easier to post them as you find them in your price range and what the problem is if it has one, then better advice could be givin. But I will say to stay away from Sonys. Not because I dont like them or the projector problem, but because they were know for eating up tubes......good luck on your search...

I would look at models you see on CL and then google for information on them. I once missed a Sony rear projection set for $50 bucks that had a common problemt that coule be corrected with a couple of diodes being replaced. I found the details on the web on how to fix. So google, as always is your friend (usually model name and problem will bring up a fix if there is an easy one). Also remember, I am sure that you know this, that most of the best deals go quick so you need to stay on top of the listings. Because of WAF, I ended up going with a direct view CRT for our living room. The media room will soon have a Runco 1100 front projector that I got off of CL.

For CRT RPTV, I think it's pretty hard to beat the later Mitsubishi sets. Full service menu with lots of controls to tweak geometry and convergence, and to get really good color. Lots of support on AVS and the net, and pros can calibrated them. My buddy had a 2003/4-vintage 65" Diamond, and it was a really excellent set. Nice, sharp scan lines on 1080i sources. They had several different lines and sizes from 50-some inches to 73", I think. If you could pick up one of the Mist sets for a few hundy, that would make a really good TV. You'd have to do some research, but a few of the higher-end Mits sets were EM/LC. A couple of top-of-the-line models even had 9" tubes, IIRC.
I've also seen a few of the last Pioneer Elite sets going for stupid-cheap. These things were $5000-7000 sets, also EM/LC, and now selling used for <$500.
I've seen some crazy prices on Craigslist here, and I'm not even in a big market. I can just imagine the deals some of you guys in the big cities have access to.

Yes, there are some good deals. I find it funny though that the prices people are asking are similar for both direct view and rear projection. A lot of people are asking $200 for a set that they paid $800 for 5 years ago that doesn't even have a HD receiver.

Oh, there are certainly some idiots. Practically any given week, I can choose from a 5-year old 16:9 HD CRT RPTV for somewhere between $300-1000, a 2-3 year old digital 720p LCD or DLP RPTV for similar money... Or I could also choose a 10-15 year old 4:3 50" 480i RPTV... for around $250-350/obo. They're so clueless, they don't realize that they MIGHT be able to get rid of it if they gave it away for FREE... with delivery. Maybe.
I've even seen 80's wood console-style TV's... Like the Magnavox/RCA's with the chiclet buttons and red LED display on the front.. listed for in the hundreds of dollars. Ummm, people, this is Goodwill/Salvation Army/FREE stuff, not stuff people will pay good money for. Durr. They must not get out much to see the prices on new stuff compared to the old crap they're selling.
Craigslist can be some of the best free entertainment you can find.
