Even my lowly NEC9PG+ stood up to Epsons equivalent to that (similar stats). If you buy a digital, buy 2 extra bulbs.
I personally am waiting for Laser or LED projectors to make their mark in 1080p before considering digital. They are a few years from that.
I was pretty torn when I first found out about CRT. I'd been researching digitals for 3+ years.
You really need to see ANY well set up CRT and you'll understand in no time. If you haven't seen one yet. Post to see if anyone is near where you live so they can show you their setup.
My 2 cents.

That's a hell of a trick with a front projector...

Here's the thread of the comparison I did with the Epson...

I would rather get the Panny 3000 before the Sanyo.
Definitely get an extra bulb or at least a bulb warranty.

I'd agree there. The Panny is pretty impressive at that price point. I'd still rather have any of the top five 9"lc CRT's. At the $2500 price point you'll be hard pressed to find a good condition one though. I've heard they exist, but are hard to find.
Still for around $2500 you could get a nice NEC 1351LC XG Or Marquee 8500LC from Curt WITH a warranty. That would definitely compete with and probably beat that Sanyo. Depends if you want to be a tweaker though. I know lots of people that like my setup, but don't want to put the work in to get one working themselves. If you simply want "plug and play" you have no choice but to go digital.
Keep us informed, but as I said before, don't discount CRT until you have the chance to see one working. It could very well win you over.

Maybe I am going about this wrong. Over the past few days I have been to Magnolia [Best Buy] to see a Sony sxrd and a Mitsubishi lcos. Neither were better than my Mitsubishi WS- 65315 RPTV.
I also went to see a 9500 L/C with Mike Parker mods on a 130" screen. The image was soft. The room was light controlled as best as could be expected during day time. The blinds were closed the drapes were drawn, it was as dark as my viewing room would be/ is.The movie {Hell Boy on Blu-ray} was played on a sony play station over 1080i. I watched this movie on my T.V. the night before. I preferred the picture on my T. V. to all of the others.
Please understand I am not knocking Mike Parker.
I am simply relaying my impression. I spoke with Mike to help me and the seller try to figure out a glitch with 1080P going to the moome card { older version }. Mike was very helpful, we believe the moome card was the issue not the projector.
I have no idea what the color setting ,temp, contrast, etc, was. I put a flash light up to the lenses there was only white reflecting back,no wear as far as a NOOB can tell. The picture had a red glow on the right side of the screen and seemed dull compared to my RPTV.
So the question is, is a Rptv just that much brighter than a front P/J ?
The setting on my T.V. are as follows temp>6500k> contrast 33>Color 32> bright 33>. THe factory neutral is 31 for all settings.
I was really hoping that the picture would knock my socks off, or at least match my T.V. only larger.
The LCOS machines were interesting FAR better than DLP {which gives me headaches} but no match for the Mitsubishi's CRT'S.
I am trying to better my set up. The screen shots on this site are a lot better than what I saw. Was the screen to big, settings to low, or something else? I Obviously don't know.
Please refrain from bashing me, I am only relaying my perceptions.
Any words of wisdom?

I have a mitsubishi RPTV CRT the 81765 dimond series profesionaly claibrated by Mitsubishi Guru Craig Rounds, he also did my marquee 8000 with some 8500 upgrades and my marquee pic blows my RPTV away, one a 12 foot screen!! Sure the pic was a bit dimmer but the colors were just way nicer on the marquee.
I was running 1080p@48.
I have a feeling something was not set up correct on his marquee. As I have a 9500LC also in stock form and that had a better pic than my 8000 easily.
If its the brightness thing that was the most bothersome then you might not be used to a properly calibrated display( if his was calibrated). they always are dimmer but its the correct settings All calibrator have to tell their customers it will take some getting used to. At a factory setting of 31, i bet your contrast if properly calibrated on the mitsu would be closer to a 17-23.

I'm sure it was calibrated by Mike Parker, he told me so. Then the darker picture is what we are shooting for? The screen shots here seem bright, so then thats my computer settings? I am going to lower the contrast on my mitsubishi to compare.
Thanks, Athan

To view a CRT projector in any environment short of near total darkness will seriously compromise the blacks and make the picture appear dim and washed out. See if you can have a looked at a well set up CRT PJ in the proper environment and see if you feel any differently. When in Tampa in 2004 for the ISF course Kevin Miller was doing an evening session of basic CRT setup. The room was dim, but not dark enough. The PJ was a Runco DTV1100 and it looked sick compared to the much brighter DLP running across the room. He reminded us at the time that these beasts (it was huge!!) work best in total darkness. He was soooo right. I now play BRs on a ceiling mounted G70 w/Moome HDMI card on an 84" matte white screen. 130" is very large for a single CRT PJ. 100" would be more realistic. A well setup CRT in a totally dark room will take your breath away...guaranteed.

This is from the guy selling the 9500 on AVS .
I had asked him about it and I think it is from 96 possibly early 97, it's a pretty old machine.
| Quote: | I moved to digital after all these years (wife acceptance factor involved, I have always loved this unit).
This is a unit I purchased from Tim Martin at ETech with his noise reduction mods. The only tube with even minimal wear was the green, which Tim replaced before purchase with a new tube.
The only person who has ever touched it is Mike Parker (setup, all of his available CRT mods, including LC Ultra modded board). It has a Moome card installed for HDMI.
I don't have kids, and it isn't used much except for DVD's, NFL playoffs, occasional TV and Pam's American Idol addiction (she and I both spend more time online that in front of the TV). Haven't put that many hours on it. I use a torus screen with high gain, so haven't had to run it hard.
Mike has been down to see it about yearly, and can vouch for the condition and what mods he has done. He offered to have you PM him with questions, and I may move the unit to DC for him to try to sell if I have to, but that's a hassle to ship or drive to him. I'd rather just have it picked up, and save a day packing or driving.
You are welcome to any of the cables I have that I don't need. |
There is no way a properly running 9500 machine on a HIGH GAIN TORUS should look that dim in a darkened room
I am guessing he thinks so as well ..

Did he still have it on a Torus ?
You could ask him to check his Bright, Contrast, and check G2 settings and see what he had it at .

No , I don't think so. He said he made the curved screen it was Displaying on. It doesn't matter all that much as he still thinks my offer is to low.
