All pulldowns have some form of wave in them, some worse than others. Usually you can live with it though.

I figured as much. You have to start somewhere and the price is fair enough.

How well does tab tensioning help to prevent waves? I've been researching screens and tab-tensioning adds about $500 to the price tag. Is it worth it?

I don't know about the tab tension screens, but I just hung my elite screen. It took 15 minutes 2 plant hanger type
J hooks slightly modified and 3/16th toggle bolts and done. It looks great.

And for the best part my wife helped Shocked

If only i had a projector Laughing

I did a set up using a tab tensioned DaLite Advantage screen

http://www.dalite.com/products/product.php?cID=32&pID=41

What a beautiful thing but expensive ..Much more then a $500 upcharge. The thing cost $2300 wholesale and weighed a TON. It took 4 men and 5 ladders to install it. The tab tensioning made for a perfectly flat screen. In years gone by I owned a Stewart tab tensioned screen and it was very flat as well. It was smaller then I wanted and I sold it. I now consider it a mistake. It will cost much more to replace it. The current budget has me using a drop down screen with out tensioning and the omnipresent wave which I can never get used to and ALWAYS notice. Even the slightest wave seems much more noticeable when there is a static display of a single color in the image. Sometimes there is a solid coclr background on some commercials or such and it becomes very noticeable. If there is a nice tab 96" - 100" 4X3 screen available in the NYC/Phila area .. LET ME KNOW!

If it costs $500 to upgrade tab-tensioned, just do it. A tab-tensioned screen is very flat, not like a manual pull-down type, so it worth the money.
