Hey guys,

I did a new fan mod on my G90 yesterday while I had it of the ceiling. My new mod replaces the noisy small fan at the front of the projector with a larger quieter one. This idea is a new one so you haven't seen anything quite like it before. The result is quieter running and with cooler than stock temperatures. It was kind of long so I put it on my web page rather than sticking it directly to the forums.

Let me know what you all think!

Interesting idea Craig,

Using a large fan always cut the noise because of lower speed needed to push same amount of air.

However, the airflow paths is not easy to understand for me, can you elaborate with a block diagram ?
Also, I'm not sure that the new JS fan can fit in this location when the G90 is lay down on the floor... Is there enough gap between floor and fan entry when the PJ is not using its front feet (like in my installation) ?

John

Here is a sloppy diagram to help with your understanding of the air flow John.

This fan mod will not work with the projector on the floor. If you want to do it with your setup you'll need to raise the front 7~10 cm. You could also consider a thinner fan as I don't think the large JapanServo is required. The fan I used really moves too much air, but I had it on hand.

Not that I want to get in the middle here, but some things I can't resist. How's this look, Craig?

So much love in this forum!

Can you feel it?

Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green

So, for those of us that aren't so inclined to drop the PJ, do the mod, re-mount, and re-converge........

Can we just remove the small fan from the inside of the PA cage and mount one of these fans on the outside blowing in like John did. Of course using the Japan fan instead of the SilenX so as to not run the risk of the PJ not being able to sense if the SilenX fan has stopped. Do you think this mounting method would also allow for the fan to be slowed some?

Mr. Green

I am sure that using a JapanServo in place of John's SilenX mod would provide better cooling than the SilenX because the JapanServo is far more powerful. The thing is that if you used a fan any bigger than John's SilenX up front, you would not be able to put the front cover back on the projector... so you'd have a kind of industrial look with fans and undercover showing.

Also, I like the placement of my fan and air dam better than with John's mod. This is because with John's front fan mod, most of the cooling goes to the PD board. With the OEM cooling most of the cooling is provided to the PA board, and the PA board is the one that runs very hot and needs more cooling. With my mod's airflow path both boards will get proportional cooling as they did with the OEM design.

When I took temperature readings with John's small front fan mod the heat sink on my G90 PA board increased in temperature by 25 degrees Fahrenheit. With my new mod the temperature actually decreed by 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

And I am NOT attacking John here! He did good work on the cooling of these G90's... I am just wanting to improvie things further after my PA board melted down Wink
