Hello
a few weeks ago I had an idea here in Germany. I am really addicted to CRTs. So within a year I gathered some of them. Two Barco 701 (one with burned blue but nice to watch movies and gaming, the other one snowy white tubes but no air bubble in the tubes - both with HD6ml) and one Sony 1272 (mint). And there will be soon more and better ones as soon as my very very small budget allows.
I am improving my home theater with my 1272 so what to do with the other CRTs?????
I have a lot of fun in my home theater, and I want to share that with not so gifted people! My idea is to "donate" my two 701. For sure, there is (for example) no children hospital that can build a theater themselves. Here are coming the local members of our world wide comunity of homtheater freaks into play. We all have equipment that we donīt use anymore. And if you are like me, you are toooo lazy to sell anything. And more important: The knowledge to build something great out of nothing than old audio audio video components. So if some people of the same region can find a place (like a hospital for sick children) to put their stuff together to a small gaming and movie room - thats what I am talking about!
Can you feeeel what itīs about?
Let me begin for region of the greater surroundings of Munich:
- I offer at least one Barco 701 and a yuv progessiv scan DVD player which the Barco takes directly - for double scan DVD playback and one of my many gaming consoles (I canīt afford new ones, but I have lots of old ones)
As you professionals know, we need a little more:
- A recommendations for an institution that needs a little "light" and can provide a room
- an old stereo amplifier and two speakers
- perhaps hushbox - because CRTs are nothing to play with
- ideas, time and knowhow / helping hand
- white wall colour to paint a wall as a screen (I should have one somewhere down in my basement)
- more audio and video stuff
Please post your thoughts how such things could be brought into life. How that can be realized the easiest way and so on. And I you live in my region, a bit more....
Perhaps you can find people in your region for a similar project - just post it.
Best regards and thanks for your time

I tried posting something similar on the avsforum years ago. I offered to give away an ECP projector (back when they were selling for $1000), to anyone that could come up with a good cause as to where it was going to be installed. AVs pulled the post, saying that they didn't want to be associated with the giveaway, due to potential liability issues.
I've got no problems at all posting this, if an old CRT projector can be put to good use like in a children's hospital, I'm all for it.

Although not a charity I did something similiar for my son's soccer coach whose family is on a limited budget. I installed a Sony PJ (1272 I think), a surround sound receiver, speakers and another forum member donated a wireless unit to transmit the video from his cable box over to the PJ. Whenever I went by his house the PJ was not being used and had not for some time due to either his kids or him not having something set correctly. I dropped my son off Saturday for a sleep over b-day party and saw that the entire setup is not there. I don't know if they moved it for the party or gave up. My point is that unlike a digital there is a good chance that a CRT projector is going to require some ongoing support to keep it operational for the non technically inclined.

Hello,
and thanks for the support! It is also very nice to hear from your projects of the past! I am sorried that the lack of maintaining manpower will mean the end for such a project. Thats why I imagine in that case always one local group that focuses on one more (I am dreaming) projects in their region. In my case that would mean that if we an establish something here in the greater surroundings of Munich, I certainly will always be there for maintaining the technical stuff from time to time. So could do other do in their projects somewhere else - some convergence....
Thats why I did include and progressive DVD player. Itīs easy to use for the people. Or imagine a video tape recorder as a basic TV source, for sure interlaced only then.
Thanks, and keep on thinking!

Not sure if you've seen the Elf Foundation that AVS sponsors, but you might look at as a model if nothing else. They've been at it for a few years and have done a whole slew of pretty nice projects. It's pretty much what you're talking about, but on a large scale. They have some big sponsors, donors, and industry support. Regardless, it's a great cause.

Hello
and thanks for links! Nice to hear of such big projects. They seem to have great donators. That allows them to build such premium places for the children, impressiv!
But the wonderful thing is that children can even be happy with an 15" TV set and a Walt Disney VHS tape. Remember the times...So I will try to create similar places, with old home theater stuff. I hope this will also bring a smile to their faces.
Best regards and have a nice day
