Wow, nice pad! I could handle winning a $1.5M house. How do taxes (both income and property) work in Canada and Ontario when you win something like that? Will they be able to afford to keep the house? In the US, if I won a house like that, I'd end up owing a $300-400k bill to the IRS, plus just the property taxes in the county I live would probably be about half my net income - more than double my entire mortgage, taxes, and insurance. I literally wouldn't be able to afford to keep a house that expensive if I won it, unless the taxes were paid, and all the property taxes covered for a number of years.

Looks like a really beautiful house. Looks like a pretty cool HT, too. I wish the pics were a little bigger.

we just pay taxes on the interest that is earned on winnings.
so if you win a million dollars here...you actually get a million dollars.

The person sitting in that farthest-out seat has to watch the faces of the other viewers to see what's happening on-screen. Wink

So, the value of the winnings are not counted as income by Canadian government?

Wow, tax free. If I won that stuff here in the US I would have to sell immediately to pay the taxes.

Plus, even if they gave you cash to cover the taxes (probably $400,000+), then the property taxes would kill you. That house in my county in little old central Iowa would probably run about $25,000/yr. or over $2000/mo. 2-grand a month... down the tubes.

Besides, if I had a $1.5M house, I want some freakin' space around me. I can see several houses in the background out the window of the sweepstakes house. Screw that. I want a bunch of trees - woods - separating the houses, or I want enough space that's a good 1/4 mile to the next property. That's my dream, anyway.

Not that I wouldn't be thrilled to win it. I'd sell it, pay the taxes, buy something more reasonable and live in a house for nearly free. That would definitely be cool.

Well, up here we have no Oprah that gives away cars.. but tells the poor that they have to pay the ~$6K taxes... I think most people couldn't take those cars because of that.

We did have a guy that won the BC Cancer Research home here in Vancouver. A buddy of mine built it, sold it to the lottery company a few years ago. THe 30 or 40-something year old winner with an average income had to sell it because he couldn't pay the property tax. Still, I'm sure he walked away with $2 mil or so in tax free money..Smile

But you'd have nothing else to pay for other than heating and electricity really.

True. I've driven by this house many times. It's in a new development where the houses are pretty close to together, and you're 100' from a major road that's turning pretty much into a highway these days. There's actually one or two other lottery winning houses right next to this one.

Yup.

The HT is really odd too like you said. That seating on the end is useless. The tables in front of the center speaker doesn't make sense and they're highly reflective tables too. I'm curious who did the HT install. There's nobody in town around here who I'd trust to know what they're doing.

Another picture of the HT: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/1160844.bin?size=620x400

You can see a virtual tour of many of the rooms too, including the HT. But check out where they put the rear speakers, it doesn't make any sense! (They're also too low).

http://tours.ilookabout.com/ToursV3/?ID=3a6e04a7cc6b7ef9&Profile=MINTOMH&Mode=CXMIW2#

EDIT: Maybe there are two other rear speakers on the other side. Still weird. The HT is way too short and wide. It doesn't work. They need to have 2 rows but there's no room the way they designed it. Obviously the HT went in after everything else was done.

I talked to Dave this morning. He plans on keeping the house and starting a family in it. He is not sure yet what the Property taxes are but figures in the 10-12K range.

I have a standing invitation to check out the HT and report back. I'm sure I can get that extended to Kal and Chris with the promise of calibration Wink

ps Kal, I'm working Dave on the brewery idea too, Dave likes beer Wink

The HT layout and color scheme would be a nice problem to have in this case. That's one hell of a prize right there. Color me jealous.

I don't want to start an argument, but that seems like a lot of money for that house. I know it is inflated retail, but I looked up the homes and they are still going for $700k plus. Is the real estate market in Ottawa still that high? My sister's house in John's Creek (Atlanta) is worth around $550k. It is roughly the same size as this house and in a very desirable part of Atlanta.

I wonder what that house would be worth in Washington DC? I bet it's more expensive since it's in the nations capitol city of Ottawa.
