I can't believe it. Two emails in a row.

Email # 1: Person bought a 9500 Ultra. Dim tubes. Measured fil voltage, someone had apparently put in an old LVPS, filament voltage at 7.9 volts! Tubes toast.

Email #2: G90, with a 'blob' on the screen. Opened attached pix. Not a burnt C element. H deflection failure on two if not all three tubes.

THAT SUCKS! Thumbs Down Thumbs Down Thumbs Down Thumbs Down Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

well this is what you get from the used and surplus market. I'm sure you, tim, and Terry get these kinds of machines all the time. I know i've seen my fair share of basket cases. The only redeeming things is if you like to refurbish CRT's then a machine like this makes a good organ donor and you can recoupe some of your cost that way.
The sad part is when someone takes all their hard earned sheckels and thinks , well I can get a rebuilt 8500 from curt or this KILLER 9500Lc Ultra for the same price. Now they have a machine that's almost totally useless and from the looks of it no refund. Caveat Emptor Sad

The fact that they can design a Sony that has deflection burn is hideous. This is the second time I've heard about that..Sad

Man! What is the deal with the number of G90s turning up with deflection burn in all three tubes?!!!!!!!!!!! There are supposed to be a ton of protect circuits to prevent this very thing from happening. Something is definitely flawed here!!!

I don't need to remind you of the less than 200hr unit I got burned on in the pic attached.

in my very first post over at AVS i called the g90 a tube burning monster, turns out i was right Crying or Very sad
a damn shame really, the g90 puts out such a nice picture even on very large screens.

when sony built the g90 they said they completely redesigned the crt projector.
they did ,everyone who bought the g90 new payed 30,00$$ to be sony`s beta tester

a shame sony never made a VPH G -100U with all the bugs worked out

Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Is this a problem that can happen on all crt pj's or is more common on the sony's?Are there measures one can take to prevent such a catastrophy?

Well, don't pull boards while the set is on! Smile

I think this is a problem with Sony sets, specifically the G90. Never seen a deflection burn on an Ampro, Barco or NEC or MArquee, although I think someone once posted a deflection burned Marquee tube.

here is the marquee's burn I don't thin we ever nailed how this one occurred but i think it have to be a deflection coil fault.

Could be. I remember a customer called saying that he had tube burn on an Ultra that I sold and installed in Alberta. I FREAKED, and TRIED to deflection burn an 8500 by pulling the yoke wires while the set was on (!!!!). I couldn't do it. Turns out he had a very thin banding line that I didn't catch when I installed the set, so I drove back to fix it. Smile

But maybe a Marquee can burn a tube if the yoke is defective?

TSE told me never to pull those while the set was on!!!! he was trying to explain to me where to look for stabilizing the marquee convergence by pulling the convergence cable and walking up to the screen to see how the grid gets nice and stable, connect it back and it moves a bit back and forth ever so slightly. I still am working on that one, but I can't believe it didn't burn when you tried the V deflection cables !!

No, of course you shouldn't pull the connectors when the set was on, I did it with a toasted tube set to see if I could duplicate the 'burn' that the customer told me he had. He even told me he could see the line when the set was off through the lenses.

Fortunately he wasn't too tech savvy, and it just turned out to be banding. Sheesh!

Big dog, I've seen deflection burn on just about every brand of CRT through the forums and in person. Not fair to the G90. Wink

We have seen what, two, maybe three of these so far? There has to be something that is causing this that is outside of the norm. Three G90's here. Zero deflection burn. Still on the ORIGINAL Dallas chips, no issues. Mr. Green (Knock, Knock)

I'm curious as to the serial numbers on the units. I wonder if they were manufactured close to each other.

Oh, AND YOU GUYS NEED TO QUIT SCARING ME. I'M THINKING ABOUT RETUBING! Evil or Very Mad Wink

One projector is up to almost 15K if not higher hours. Fingers crossed.

Curt,
I know you've seen a burn like this before. It looks like a horizontal collapse, but it's actually the lost of B+ to both vertical and horizontal sweep. Sometimes when that happens, the horizontal will just collapse while the vertical will move either top to bottom first.

Anyway, problems like this was solved with a cap (electrolytic) being either after the B+ from the main supply, or one at each sweep supply rail.

I'm thinking they should have put some more storage at the sweep rails. If that's not the problem, then there's a problem with the mute/protect circuits.

I'll look at the diagram.

It's interesting on the blue and red tube the burns appears to be off center towards the middle of the projector, yet the green looks to be centered. It would seem if there was a total loss of deflection all burns would be in the center of the tubes.

Perhaps they are centered and its an optical illusion.
